Ignatius Insight: Ratzinger's Faith and Reason | In Appreciation of Ratzinger's Faith: The Theology of Pope Benedict XVI

This article on Ignatius Insight and titled, " Ratzinger's Faith and Reason >> In Appreciation of Tracey Rowland's 'Ratzinger's Faith: The Theology of Pope Benedict XVI' " is a book review by Fr. James V. Schall, S.J. Father Schall chooses these two paragraphs to begin his review: "Benedict believes that the Mass is a Holy Sacrifice, offered ritually as worship, not a fellowship meal, that those who attend do so for the purpose of Divine Worship, that music which is based on most contemporary popular musical forms is completely unworthy, and that everything that is related to the Mass and other liturgies of the Church should be marked by beauty. Beauty is not an optional extra or something contrary to a preferential option for the poor. It is not a scandal to clothe sacred words in silken garments. Catholics are not tone deaf philistines who will be intellectually challenged by the use of a liturgical language or put off by ch

The Mountain Echo: FOCUS missionaries coming to campus

Katie Sechrist of Mount Saint Mary's reported April 30th in " The Mountain Echo " that FOCUS is coming to campus this coming Fall . Here is a snippet from Katie's article: "FOCUS will be coming at the invitation of the archbishop of Baltimore and President Powell, there is a great desire for scripture and FOCUS provides trained individuals for that, they will also reach out to others. This will supplement what Campus Ministry is doing," said Msgr. Swetland, who is the East Coast chaplain for FOCUS and will be involved with their training as well as newly appointed Chaplain and Director of Campus Ministry, Fr. Brian Nolan. In order for a team from FOCUS to come to a university, the bishop of that diocese must approve. Since there has been a transition within the diocese, one of the first things that Archbishop Edwin O'Brian did was approve for the group to come to the Mount at the request of President Powell. Catholic Review Online carries a story by Regina Linskey of Catholic News Service . The story states in its lead: “In no cases does CRS promote, purchase or distribute condoms,” said Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan of Milwaukee, CRS chairman, in the letter obtained April 29 by Catholic News Service. Saying that “all HIV programs supported by CRS promote abstinence until marriage and mutual fidelity within marriage,” Archbishop Dolan noted that CRS’ positions “are fully in keeping with (U.S. bishops’) conference policies.” CRS is the U.S. bishops’ international relief and development agency. First Things: On the Square >> The Philosophy of Medicine Reborn

This is an important article by Patrick C. Beeman on the future of the profession of medicine . To take a snippet from the opening of this article: Where is the profession of medicine going? Has it become simply applied biology, another “job” among equally good ways of earning a living? What kind of person should the physician be? What about bioethics? Is patient autonomy the only viable moral absolute? Oh, and—who is Dr. Edmund Pellegrino? In The Philosophy of Medicine Reborn: A Pellegrino Reader , Tristram Engelhardt, a bellwether of bioethics, and Fabrice Jotterand, who holds a dual appointment within the University of Texas system as assistant professor of philosophy and “psychiatry and clinical sciences,” have answered these questions by offering nineteen selections from Edmund Pellegrino’s six hundred articles and twenty-four books. At one time or another, Pellegrino was director of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics; president of the Catholic University of America; professor of
