Ars Catholica >> More outside the walls

Ars Catholica follows up an earlier post on its mediation on art, beauty and God with some troubling news from secular atheists . The summation holds a key: But let’s think here - can art really point to a better, nobler life without belief in God? What is to define beauty, if truth has no meaning other than what humans decide? What is there to lift us up to, if there is no example beyond ourselves? And isn’t the concentration of today’s ‘art’ on shock and surprise directly related to a decline in faith? This is precisely why a loss of Catholic traditions in art, music, liturgy, and architecture and the influence of contemporary theories of art in the mass is so poisonous. Just as contemporary art chooses only to offer us veneration of ourselves with no possibility of transcendence, modern church architecture and ‘mass in the round’ wreakovation attempts to bring the focus on the congregation, that group of “morally troubling fellow human beings” rather than pointing us to Christ.

WDTPRS: Washington, DC and Baltimore: Upcoming Solemn TLMs

Father John Zuhlsdorf has posted an email with the two "major events" for this coming weekend . First, there is the F.S.S.P. Mass to be held in the Crypt at the Basilica of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in D.C. on Saturday, June 7th . And second, there is a Solemn High Mass at Saint Alphonsus Church in Baltimore on Sunday, June 8th with Fr. Romanoski celebrating . Please see his post. Both locations can be found in the menu on the right under Blogroll and Favorite Websites.

Homeschool Alert >> Immaculate Heart of Mary Home School and Parent Conferences

My ever vigilant friend in West Virginia has alerted me to a series of Home School Conferences . The National Conference is scheduled for June 13th and 14th at the Dulles Expo and Conference Hall . Directions can be found here . The speakers list is shown here and includes a number of superb guests . The full schedule is linked here . Note the following (as pointed out by my friend): On Saturday, June 14, Fr. Joseph Fessio will have two talks: 9:30-10:15 am Pope Benedict XVI and the Mass "Learn about the themes from his classic text The Spirit of the Liturgy. What does pope Benedict XVI say about sacrifice, music, participation, kneeling, the tabernacle, adoration and the direction of prayer?" 3:00-3:45 pm Pope Benedict XVI and the Motu Proprio "The Motu Proprio was not just a short-term solution to the problem of some schismatics and a few people with nostalgia for the old Mass. It is rather part of a plan to renew the whole Church, announced

Visitors ask...FSSP Ordinations in Lincoln, Nebraska on May 30th

For some reason, many visitors are unable to find this marvelous link to What Does the Prayer Really Say which has a gorgeous photo-montage of the entire Ordination in Lincoln, NE taken from EWTN . Fr. Zuhlsdorf also provides commentary.

Visitors ask...What is the Latin for "In God We Trust?"

This is not as simple as one might think. If you check the internet, you'll find many forms of this simple motto and some are rather bizarre. The one most often cited is "In Deo speramus" which means "In God We Trust," but could also be translated "In God We Hope." The motto is that of Brown University where it is, in fact, translated "hope." However, this webpage is a move to make this motto official and the phrasing used is "In Deo speramus ." That would seem realistic since a phrase in the Vulgate of St. Jerome uses "spero" to mean "to trust" (see below): The Vulgate translates Psalms 62:8 ("Trust in Him at all times) this way: sperate in eo omni tempore .

Visitors ask...Saint Joseph Monastery, Archdiocese of Baltimore

Visitors ask for Saint Joseph (Passionist) Monastery and then go off on a tangent checking out Monasteries in the FAQs listing. To find Saint Joseph Monastery, first get the alphabetical listing of Parishes in the Archdiocese of Baltimore . Then, scroll down and find Saint Joseph Passionist Monastery here . Note that there is also a private webpage so we can check that over as well . Nice! In the cases of both Saint Bernadette Parish (below) and Saint Joseph Passionist Monastery, the fastest way to locate either of them was via the Archdiocesan websites . I have both the Archdiocese of Washington and Archdiocese of Baltimore linked in the Blogroll and Favorite Websites in the RIGHT MENU BAR .

Visitors ask...Saint Bernadette Church in the ADW (or any Parish in the Archdiocese of Washington)

Saint Bernadette's Parish in Silver Spring is a perennial "search" to land on this blog. I must get at least 2 hits a week searching for it. First, it is in the Archdiocese of Washington so the trick is to look up all the Parishes in that Archdiocese. So, simply click here . Note that the Parishes are divided into Washington or Maryland (as the ADW takes in areas of both). Checking the Maryland Parishes , it is found here under Saint Bernadette .
