OSV Daily Take - New on campus: Hard-core Porn 101 - Update

OSV Daily Take posted this story by Mary Deturris Poust concerning the University of Maryland at College Park . Since it was initially reported by the Baltimore Sun, it made the national news. Apparently, cooler heads in the Maryland Senate prevailed in having this "film" event cancelled. The update contains the details of the cancellation via an update in the Baltimore Sun.

Divine Mercy Sunday - April 19th, 2009 - Chaplet in English and Latin

I receive many inquiries on the Divine Mercy Chaplet and Divine Mercy Sunday which falls on Sunday, April 19th, 2009. The National Shrine is located here in Stockbridge, MA . This presents the prayers of the Chaplet in English including all those enclosed in the Divine Mercy Chaplet brochure which I use . I found that the marvelous Fisheaters site has the prayers in English and Latin which many seek . Instructions on the Novena can be found at the National Shrine site .

SpaceWeather.com: Deep Solar Minimum

You have every right to ask, "what has this to do with the Catholic Church?" Nothing...absolutely nothing. However, I must confess that I am a sunspot junkie. SpaceWeather.com just sent their weekly newsletter and this is the lead story: SPOTLESS SUNS: Yesterday, NASA announced that the sun has plunged into the deepest solar minimum in nearly a century. Sunspots have all but vanished and consequently the sun has become very quiet . In 2008, the sun had no spots 73% of the time, a 95-year low. In 2009, sunspots are even more scarce, with the "spotless rate" jumping to 87%. We are currently experiencing a stretch of 25 continuous days uninterrupted by sunspots--and there's no end in sight. This is a big event, but it is not unprecedented. Similarly deep solar minima were common in the late-19th and early-20th centuries, and each time the sun recovered with a fairly robust solar maximum. That's probably what will happen in the present case, although no

Holy Week: English-Latin Propers for Holy Week Online

This was stated last year and is still true. To my knowledge, there is no online resource which is yet in full accord with the stipulations of Summorum Pontificum . Only a written Missal will have the appropriate and correct Propers for the Mass. So, be advised of that fact straightaway. The Tridentine Latin Rite Missal Project is the embodiment of one person who has transcribed the pre- and post-1955 Missal online . It is a Herculean effort. Here is his line-up for Holy Week . Please see the above statement as a caveat: Palm Sunday (Pre-1955 version) (see Una Voce below) Maundy Thursday (Post-1955 version) Good Friday (Post-1955 version; the changes of Pope Benedict are NOT included) The Paschal Vigil (Post-1955 version); note the words of the Exsultet are to be found here Please use these as a guideline. There are sites such as the Una Voce of Orange County which have more current versions for some of these Masses in multiple file formats .

Finding a Mass or Passion Service During Holy Week in the Maryland Area: How to Proceed

Okay, if you have landed here, you are in the right place, but you will have to do this logically... First, you need to find a Parish. Then, you need to call the Rectory and find out when Masses or Services are held; many have recordings at this time of year. This is not listed in any master database...sorry, I wish I could say otherwise. In the Maryland, DC, Arlington area: First, if you are looking for the Extraordinary Form Mass, the Usus Antiquior , the Tridentine, a Latin Mass or the Gregorian Rite, those Holy Week listings are here (and will be updated all week). If you are simply looking for a "Novus Ordo" or "regular" Sunday Mass (or Passion Service), proceed as follows: Near Baltimore and not near D.C. or its adjacent Maryland suburbs, find a Parish here . In Maryland but on the Eastern Shore near Salisbury or Ocean City, go here . In D.C. or along the Western shore of Maryland along the Chesapeake Bay, find a Parish here . South of D.C. and across the
