Catholic Online - Archbishop Burke: Catholic News Service Needs 'New Direction'

Catholic Online picks up a story reported by LifeSiteNews. Archbishop Burke, Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, has some interesting things to say about CNS, the Catholic News Service . Archbishop Burke, the former Archbishop of St. Louise Mo. and recently appointed head of the highest ecclesiastical court in the Catholic Church, told LifeSiteNews.com that although “there were a greater number of bishops who spoke up very clearly and firmly ... there was also a number who did not.” But most damaging, he said, was the document “Faithful Citizenship” that “led to confusion” among the voting Catholic population. “While it stated that the issue of life was the first and most important issue, it went on in some specific areas to say ‘but there are other issues’ that are of comparable importance without making necessary distinctions.” Read the entire story here .

Whispers in the Loggia: "...And They Called it Camelot"

Mr. Palmo does a splendid story on Archbishop Burke and his return to his old home : the Eternal City. There is one paragraph that caught my eye, however: Widely believed to be one of Pope Benedict's top consultors in crafting the canonical aspects of Summorum Pontificum -- the pontiff's 2007 motu proprio granting wider permission for the celebration of the pre-Conciliar missal -- one untouched aspect in the significant buzz over the archbishop's transfer is the significant likelihood that, given his new base at the Vatican, his long ties to the communities attached to the "Old Rite," not to mention (much like the Signatura's docket) the issue's predominant concentration to the English-speaking world, the archbishop could just be named in due course to head the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei in succession to Colombian Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos, who turned 79 in early July. As we shall see...Lord willing .

NCR Cafe.org: More on Burke’s move to Vatican court

John Allen of the National Catholic Reporter discusses the promotion of H.E. Archbishop Raymond Burke to Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura . Mr. Allen writes a very complimentary story that makes great sense in light of the Archbishop's high profile in the U.S. episcopal scene, his reputation as a canonist, and his familiarity with Rome. Thanks to AmericanPapist for spotting this great story !

In the Light of the Law: First thoughts on Abp. Burke's promotion to the Signatura

Dr. Edward Peters has posted his initial thoughts on the promotion of Archbp. Burke to the Signatura . I obviously defer to him on his "insider knowledge," but echo his sentiments at being a bit sad as well. Archbp. Raymond Burke is a gem and will be greatly missed in the American Church. I can imagine that St. Louis will be extremely sad to see him go. However, his talents are needed in the Eternal City it seems.
