The Witherspoon Institute: Public Discourse - "Little Murders" by Archbishop Charles J. Chaput

The Witherspoon Institute on its website " Public Discourse - Ethics, Law and the Common Good " features an excellent address given by Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Denver . Here is just a bit of what His Excellency had to say: The abortion conflict has never simply been about repealing Roe v. Wade . And the many pro-lifers I know live a much deeper kind of discipleship than ''single issue'' politics. But they do understand that the cornerstone of Catholic social teaching is protecting human life from conception to natural death. They do understand that every other human right depends on the right to life. They did not and do not and will not give up - and they won't be lied to. So I think that people who claim that the abortion struggle is ''lost'' as a matter of law, or that supporting an outspoken defender of legal abortion is somehow ''prolife,'' are not just wrong; they're betraying the witness of every person ...

First Things: On the Square >> Vote for Real Hope and Change by Charles J. Chaput, Archbishop of Denver

This was posted this week, but it bears to be seen again. H.E. Archbishop Charles Chaput has written a book entitled " Render Unto Caesar: Serving the Nation by Living Our Catholic Beliefs in Political Life " which can be pre-ordered from Amazon.com. He submitted this essay to First Things this past week . Here is a portion of it: Obviously, we have other important issues facing us this fall: the economy, the war in Iraq, immigration justice. But we can’t build a healthy society while ignoring the routine and very profitable legalized homicide that goes on every day against America’s unborn children. The right to life is foundational . Every other right depends on it. Efforts to reduce abortions, or to create alternatives to abortion, or to foster an environment where more women will choose to keep their unborn child, can have great merit— but not if they serve to cover over or distract from the brutality and fundamental injustice of abortion itself . We should remember ...

Archbishop Chaput: "We expect our employees to respect Catholic teaching..."

Carl Olson of Ignatius Insight Scoop has a nice synopsis of the ongoing story of Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver and the controversy over a proposed bill that would attack religious identity in social services. Here is just a portion of the story: Archbishop Charles Chaput called House Bill 1080 an "attack on religious identity" in his weekly column appearing in last week's Denver Catholic Register. He subsequently answered questions about the bill in an e-mail exchange with the Rocky Mountain News: Q: The most straightforward interpretation of your column suggests that you will shut down Catholic Charities if this bill - or any bill - passes which restricts your ability to hire or fire based on Catholic religious standards. Is that a correct reading of what you will do? Chaput: No. Catholic Charities will continue its core mission to the poor with or without public funds. If the government wants to carry the burden it currently asks religious-affiliated group...
