Catholic Review Online: Archbishop is ‘disappointed,’ ‘bewildered’ by honor to Obama

The Archbishop of the "Premier See" of the United States has expressed his thoughts on the invitation of President Obama to the commencement at the University of Notre Dame . In a story written by George Matysek, Jr., His Excellency states his views: Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien said he is “disappointed and bewildered” by the decision of University of Notre Dame officials to honor President Barack Obama with an honorary doctorate at this year’s graduation ceremony. The university announced March 20 that the president would be the commencement speaker at its May 17 graduation. In a March 26 letter, Archbishop O’Brien told Notre Dame President Holy Cross Father John I. Jenkins he “fully supports” the March 24 statement of Bishop John M. D’Arcy of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, Ind., that raised concerns about the decision. Bishop D’Arcy pledged not to attend this year’s graduation and cited a 2004 statement by the U.S. Catholic bishops that Catholic institutions “shou

Una Voce Carmel: Former FSSP District Superior strengthens St. Mother Theodore Guérin Latin Mass community

I noticed in an earlier post that the F.S.S.P. North American website had not included the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend in its list of apostolates. This is a post from Una Voce Carmel documenting that Fr. George Gabet is now celebrating Mass in this Diocese . Father Gabet will travel to South Bend almost every Sunday to celebrate Mass at St. John the Baptist. He will also offer a daily Latin Mass at Sacred Heart in Fort Wayne. Other priests who are willing and available will say the Sunday Mass in Fort Wayne. Read the full story here . I suppose this is so new that the website has not been updated to reflect it.

Tuesday Evening Report

I seem to have gotten into a Catholic education motif today for some reason. Apropos to that (or perhaps not) a couple of items caught my eye: American Papist has a wonderful story on what blogger Tom Peters calls a "shout out" by Pope Benedict XVI for Christendom College in Virginia. Bravo ! On the other hand, Creative Minority Report has a story about an Indiana University which shunned the advice and protests of the local Ordinary . Finally, Father Zuhlsdorf straightens out the confusion as to when the Feast of St. Joseph and the Feast of the Annunciation should be celebrated according to the 1962 Missale Romanum when the former falls during Holy Week . Busy day!

TLM Michiana: News Still Pending Regarding Latin Mass Community

The TLM in Michiana is still celebrating the TLM offered on Laetare Sunday by Fr. Gabet of the F.S.S.P. The blog has more to announce but is awaiting the official announcement from Bishop D'Arcy and the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter. Read more here . Congratulations to South Bend!

Summorum Pontificum: Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Latin Mass Community of Fort Wayne-South Bend

U.S. bishops shun Notre Dame venue due to V-Monologues

Catholic News Agency reports this development from the USCCB and Notre Dame : A theological seminar for Catholic bishops has been relocated from the campus of the University of Notre Dame in response to the school’s planned performance of the play “The Vagina Monologues,” the South Bend Tribune reports. The seminar, a meeting of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Doctrine, includes Notre Dame faculty who act as advisors and is co-sponsored by the university’s Institute for Church Life. Instead of taking place on the Notre Dame campus, it has been moved to a convent of the Sisters of St. Francis in Mishawaka, Indiana. Seven bishops and archbishops are members of the Committee on Doctrine, while its consultants include Notre Dame theology department chair Dr. John C. Cavadini and the Archbishop of Chicago Cardinal Francis George. Read more here... One gets the feeling that a struggle is ongoing between the secular and the sublime on the same campus!
