Father John Corapi, SOLT

Anyone who watches EWTN regularly certainly knows of Fr. John Corapi. Some may have watched his entire series on the Catholic Catechism, or seen any number of other series this powerful preacher has done. He once estimated, not in boasting, that as many as one billion people may have heard his Catechism series. This is the power and potential of multimedia which has been praised by Pope John Paul II and by Pope Benedict XVI. Father's style of speech is powerful and he clearly loves being a priest. He says that he prepares for every hour of speaking by several hours of prayer before the Holy Eucharist. It is evident. The YouTube below is a shortened version of his original audiotape on his own conversion. If you are traveling this summer, and if you want to listen to some quality Catholic tapes, check his talks available on SOLT . You might even sign up for his newsletter. I did.... Father's John's speaking schedule has slowed down. We need to hear him now on ta

The Eastern Catholic Churches

Yesterday, I posted a link to an article on The New Liturgical Movement with comments on the Liturgy by Fr. Mitch Pacwa. Fr. Pacwa noted that he celebrates the Maronite Divine Liturgy but not the Extraordinary Form of the Latin Missal due to his facility in Aramaic. That brought some questions. I asked my friend, Carolyn, to kindly assist in explaining the Eastern Catholic Churches. Here is her post: Although it is not widely known in our Western world, the Catholic Church is actually a communion of Churches. According to the Constitution on the Church of the Second Vatican Council, Lumen Gentium, the Catholic Church is understood to be "a corporate body of Churches," united with the Pope of Rome, who serves as the guardian of unity (LG, no. 23). At present there are 22 Churches that comprise the Catholic Church. The new Code of Canon Law, promulgated by Pope John Paul II, uses the phrase "autonomous ritual Churches" to describe these various Churches (canon

CNS STORY: Bishops discuss integrating doctrine, Scripture and preaching

Don Clemmer of Catholic News Service (CNS) reported on a seminar for Bishops held February 11th-13th on the relationship of Doctrine and Scripture in Catholic teaching with an emphasis on homilies. Here is a snippet: Preaching his homily on the final afternoon of the seminar, Cardinal Levada recalled how God called upon Jonah to save the people of Nineveh by preaching his word. "If Jonah could be eloquent under those circumstances," said Cardinal Levada of the reluctant prophet, "how much more eloquent, brother bishops, can you and I be? An eloquence not from our own skills, but from the Spirit teaching us." He continued, "Only Jesus can lead us in the Spirit and make us sharers in the Holy Trinity. It's not what we say or do, but the person of the risen Christ, present in the word and the sacrament. This is how we are drawn into communion with God." Read the entire story here .
