Catholic Review Online: Intimidated? | Archbishop Edwin F. O'Brien

In his weekly column, " Thoughts on Our Church ," Archbishop Edwin F. O'Brien recounts a brief lesson in Maryland history : The seeds were probably sown centuries ago in a hostile atmosphere for Catholics in the New World. In 1633, as the earliest colonists were about to set sail for “Mary Land”, Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore, instructed “his said Governor and Commissioners” that while sailing and upon arrival at their destination “they instruct all the Roman Catholics to be silent on all occasions of discourse concerning matters of religion...” His Excellency then goes on in his thoughtful essay to demonstrate the modern results of this mindset: From those days and even to the present, many Catholics have too often felt that we have still to prove ourselves as truly American. Nothing has seemed capable of persuading the Protestant majority that Catholicism could be compatible with American democracy. It has been said that Catholics’ participation in World Wars

Catholic World News: English Church forced to drop adoption services

CWNews.com posted this story today from England . It reads in part: The dioceses of Southwark, Portsmouth, and Arundel and Brighton have agreed to end their affiliation with the Catholic Children's Society. The group will be renamed Cabrini Children’s Society. The Mail predicted that other dioceses would soon follow suit, while some Catholic agencies vowed a court battle to protect their right to continue offering adoption services without compromising their Catholic identity. Answers for Occasional Visitors

This blog frequently is visited by those who search Google for "key words" and end up here looking for their answer. This is most likely due to the fact that I have used key words for an article or have a link to certain sites on my menu to the right. Some "query chains" happen more often than others, so I thought I'd accommodate some of you. There are visitors looking for links to Catholic medical doctors or medical organizations that are associated with the Catholic Church. This may be because I have posted pro-life articles at times. In this regard, my research indicates that the Catholic Medical Association is the best place to start. Here is the link . Some international visitors are looking for the home page of the Carmelites . This is probably due to the fact that the Carmelite Lectio Divina site is on the right menu. The international home page for the Carmelites is here . There are some who are looking for the Latin TLM readings for a particula

Archbishop Burke addresses Catholic identity

The February 1st edition of St. Louis Review Online carries an interview of Archbishop Raymond L. Burke by staff writer Jennifer Brinker . Here are several snips: Why were you concerned about responding to the comments made by St. Louis University basketball coach Rick Majerus that he favors abortion rights and is pro-embryonic stem-cell research? There are two levels of concern that I had in addressing the issue. Here is someone who makes a point to identify himself as a Catholic and then takes positions that are contrary to some of the most sacred teachings of the Church — teachings with regard to the inviolable dignity of every human life from the moment of its beginning. It gives scandal to other people, Catholics and nonCatholics alike, if they hear a Catholic give an interview to the media, saying that I am proud to be a Catholic but at the same time I hold these views. Then there is a second level, which is that (Majerus) represents a Catholic institution. He is a very prom
