On June 6th, 1944, Allied Forces under the command of General Dwight David Eisenhower initiated "Operation Overlord," the invasion of Normandy . The invasion involved over 850,00 troops. The 29th Infantry Division , the "Blue and the Gray," whose motto is "29! Let's Go !" was tasked with taking and securing "Omaha Beach." The 29th took heavy casualties on that day , but managed to take and secure the beach and move inland. Joseph Balkoski, the Command Historian of the Maryland National Guard, wrote several vital books on the assault and the beachhead . The American Cemetery in Normandy is located at Colleville-sur-Mer . Scenes shot for the movie "Saving Private Ryan" were taken in that Cemetery. This is a view from the Cemetery overlooking "Omaha Beach." Requiescant in pace!
