Orthodox Catholic Retreats and Missions: Fathers of Mercy

A frequent item in the search queue is "Retreats for men or women." Clearly, some of these are for the discernment of vocations. For others, it is simply the desire to get away and to become once more filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit. There are many good retreats that seem to make the rounds by "word of mouth." I once asked a friend for advice on a religious Order that gave excellent retreats, and his answer was, " The Fathers of Mercy ." As he said then, "they really 'bring it'." By that, I understood him to mean that they had the gift of those Orders that had a special charism for preaching the good news--the Gospel. The Fathers of Mercy is an Order located in Kentucky that preaches Parish Missions and that gives Retreats. If you have watched EWTN at all, you are familiar with this Order. Their Charism is described here , and their Apostolate here . This lists the Parish Missions scheduled in Kentucky (the Generalate)...

EWTN Program Alert: Sunday, October 26th - "Into Great Silence"

A friend mentioned this in an email. Check the TV lineup on EWTN for Sunday, October 26th, 2008 . At 9 PM Eastern time, " Into Great Silence " is being shown in its entirety. Either print out this calendar or mark this date! US only! Step into the riveting silence of Philip Groning's stunning new documentary on the spirituality of Carthusian monks. Filmed without narration and very little dialogue at the Monastery of the Grand Chartreuse in France, Mr. Groning captures the brimming vitality of monastic life and the overpowering sound of God.

EWTN Classics: The Prayer of Lady Macbeth: How the Contraceptive Mentality Has Neutered Religious Life

Some messages are classics. Rev. Paul V. Mankowski, S.J., Professor of Biblical Studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, published this article in the Spring 1993 issue of "Faith & Reason" . It is now in the EWTN Library and it still resonates with profound truth. [...] Suppose for a moment that a Catholic comes to believe that the teaching Church is wrong in condemning contraception but right about everything else. How does he judge the Church wrong in the one case? As we have seen, by reference to some standard that is more reliable than the Church. But how does he judge the Church to be right in the other million-and-one instances? Obviously, only in virtue of the same standard by which he found her defective. It is absurd, not to say insane, to claim that one obeys, or is faithful to, the Church in those areas in which he happens to agree with her because "happens to agree" is the operative phrase. If my pocket calculator has prove...

Visitors ask...Arabic Catholic Churches in Maryland

I have posted on this before but it is recurring. The Catholic Church is not composed simply of the Latin Rite . Instead, as this post on EWTN points out: There are three major groupings of Rites based on this initial transmission of the faith, the Roman , the Antiochian (Syria) and the Alexandrian (Egypt). Later on the Byzantine derived as a major Rite from the Antiochian, under the influence of St. Basil and St. John Chrysostom . From these four derive the over 20 liturgical Rites present in the Church today. The languages used in these Rites varies. I know priests of the Maronite Rite who celebrate the Divine Liturgy in Aramaic but who also know the Latin Rite and speak beautiful Latin or English. I just checked the Archdiocesan website and can't find much in the way of the Eastern Rites. This website, from the Byzantine Catholics of Anerica, has a more comprehensive list .

CNA: FSSP to distribute free copies of new Latin Mass DVD

A story by the Catholic News Agency confirms what has been posted on blogs and which has appeared on the F.S.S.P. website . The Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP), in cooperation with EWTN, will soon release an instructional video on the 1962 Latin Mass. A free copy will be available to any priest or seminarian who reserves the video on its web site. The video includes over three hours of footage on two DVD discs, giving a step-by-step explanation and demonstration of the Low Mass in the Extraordinary Form. The production includes multiple appendices with instructions on the general principles of gesture and movement, as well as commonly encountered variations in the elements of the Mass. Also featured is a real-time demonstration of the Mass, which is viewable from multiple camera angles on demand. A spiritual commentary on the Mass, as well as an explanation from an FSSP priest on the liturgical principles of the Extraordinary Form are also included. Dario Cardinal Castr...

Special: FSSP and EWTN Produce Training DVD; Free for priests in North America

Shawn Tribe of The New Liturgical Movement has a fascinating post . The F.S.S.P. in association with EWTN is offering a free DVD for all priests in North America . The DVD is a training video for the Usus Antiquior with an introduction by Cardinal Castrillon-Hoyos . As Shawn states: The first DVD contains the introduction by Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos, followed by a "comprehensive explanation of the entire ceremony of Low Mass..." The second DVD included in the set includes "a real time demonstration of the Mass filmed from four simultaneous camera angles with the ability to switch the viewing angle at any time. Also includes a spiritual commentary on the Mass by Fr. Calvin Goodwin, FSSP." Check here for more .
