Spring Destinations: National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes, Emmitsburg, MD

I have written before on the National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes in Emmitsburg, MD located just above the campus of Mt. St. Mary's University . The link is within the Favorite Websites and Blogroll in the right menu. As it is Spring and the month of Mary, May, visitors begin to contemplate visiting the Shrine in force. Here is a schedule posted on the Shrine's website . Note that retreats and pilgrimages can be scheduled in advance as shown here . Father Jack Lombardi tells us a bit about the Grotto . This says it all, I think: Well, here’s one story. I was recently giving blessing with a relic of Mother Teresa after Sunday noon Mass to all the children gathered. I came upon a little boy in a wheelchair. His family gathered around him and asked for God’s healing. The little boy, age five, said, simply, point blank: “I want to walk.” The Grotto is above all a place of healing and prayer, where all souls can come, like that little boy, and ask for God’s strength, grace

The National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes is one of the oldest American replicas of the revered French shrine, dating to about two decades after the apparitions at Lourdes (1874), although the site had already been in use for more than seventy years as a place of prayer and devotion. The Grotto was proclaimed a Public Oratory on December 8, 1965 by His Eminence Lawrence Cardinal Shehan, Archbishop of Baltimore. A place of pastoral beauty and spiritual inspiration, the Grotto draws hundreds of thousands of religious pilgrims and tourists annually. CLICK to enlarge...
