Good Friday: "Ecce Homo!" ("Behold the Man!") - Passion of Saint John

John 19:4-5 Exiit iterum Pilatus foras et dicit eis ecce adduco vobis eum foras ut cognoscatis quia in eo nullam causam invenio et purpureum vestimentum et dicit eis ecce homo . Pilate therefore went forth again and saith to them: Behold, I bring him forth unto you, that you may know that I find no cause in him. (Jesus therefore came forth, bearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment.) And he saith to them: "Behold the Man." Update and Note : The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is not celebrated anywhere in the world on Good Friday . Some Parishes will have the traditional "Passion service" held at 3:00 PM (which in the Extraordinary Form is called the "Good Friday Office") and/or Stations of the Cross. When a Passion Service is held, the altar is totally bare. There is Veneration of the Cross and Holy Communion--consecrated on Holy Thursday and held in repose--is distributed to the faithful. There is also no Mass on Holy Saturday until the Easter V

Divine Mercy Parish - Divine Mercy Novena - Divine Mercy Sunday

As we enter the Triduum, I want to remind you that Divine Mercy Sunday is April 19th, the Sunday after Easter. For those who wish to recite the novena, it begins tomorrow on Good Friday . I posted links to the Chaplet itself and to the intentions of the nine-day novena in this post . Please state the intentions for the First Day tomorrow. Many parishes will have a Divine Mercy Service. One is being held at Saint Alphonsus Church, for example. However, the official Shrine for the Divine Mercy in the Archdiocese is Holy Rosary Parish . The Shrine will be the site of the Divine Mercy on the 19th. Please consult the website for the explanation of the miracle which occurred to Father Ronald Pytel which was instrumental in the sainthood of Sr. Faustina.

Catholic Review Online: Baseball home opener on Good Friday ends 20-year attendance streak

Marylynn G. Hewitt's story carried by CNS and posted in the Catholic Review Online begins this way: Michael Ochab’s 20-year streak of rooting for the Detroit Tigers as part of the opening day crowd is coming to an end. Home opening day this year falls on Good Friday, April 10. “It’s a no-brainer for me,” said the 47-year-old lifetime Hamtramck resident. “He died for us on that cross.” I have to tip my hat to Mr. Ochab. Good Friday is just another day now especially for big time sports and entertainment. Fr. Ed Vilkauskas conveys my sentiments exactly: Five blocks from Comerica, Spiritan Father Ed Vilkauskas, pastor of Old St. Mary Church in Detroit’s Greektown, said having opening day on Good Friday “is kind of appalling. “I think it’s a pretty big affront to Christians,” he said. “It’s one of the most sacred and solemn days of the Christian calendar and to do that is insensitive to our faith. “Not too many years ago, stores actually closed noon to 3 p.m. Even banks were closed,

Reminder: TLM Latin Holy Week Masses

This was posted previously, but I thought I'd do it once more . Click this link for a previous post summarizing the schedules here (Baltimore) and in D.C. I have posted the schedules for Saint Alphonsus and for Saint James the Greater in Charles Town, WV. DC Catholic has a link to the DC calendar of events. Also note the list of Parishes on the menu bar to the right . Many have their bulletins online on their website and so will have their particular Holy Week schedules. Also, check here . This is a search from MassTimes.org and lists ALL Latin Masses in the region (both the TLM and the Ordinary Form). This may help you narrow your search. Note that Silver Spring was chosen arbitrarily as the "center" for this search. Finally, here is a list of all Parishes in the Baltimore metro region . The times include Sunday Mass and Vigils. Many have web pages. If you know the zip code you are visiting, you should be able to find a "close fit."
