Traditional Latin Mass in Maryland - New Blog Feature: Special Events Calendar

For some time, I've wondered how to integrate a calendar into this blog that would be of use for Special Events or non-recurring events . Usus Antiquior or Tridentine Masses scheduled weekly can be assembled in a menu ( SEE RIGHT MENU NAVBAR, for example ) and linked to Parish websites. However, what of the occasional special Mass, colloquium or musical event ? So many of these are missed when posted here unless someone knows of it in advance. The New Liturgical Movement has found a solution using a calendar embedded into their blog page . Events are self-reported and require approval by the moderator. This is a huge blog, however, affiliated with the CMAA, receives millions of "hits" and handles international events. So, the local may be lost in the shuffle. In the header to this blog, you will now see the following: Special Event Usus Antiquior Calendar for MD, DC, VA, DE, PA and WV (opens New Window) This calendar is one I've created for TLM events in t

Musica Sacra: Sung Extraordinary Form: A Workshop for Priests and Seminarians

I have had visitors searching for Retreats or Workshops for priests on Gregorian Chant and other such topics. I would advise anyone seeking help in Sacred Music to first visit Musica Sacra. Here is one example--a Workshop on the Sung Mass in April, 2009 . Here is a list of upcoming events . Here is the ad for the Sacred Music Colloquium . Please bookmark MusicSacra . It is THE place to search first.

NLM: Fr. Paul and his St. Peter's Singers

Jeffrey Tucker has some fine commentary on the story in the Toronto Globe and Mail that was posted too by Aristotle A. Esguerra in an earlier post (see below). Mr. Tucker goes into a bit more detail in his commentary. It seems that the Vatican Choir is in excellent hands!

NLM: Fantastic interview with Stift Heiligenkreuz monk

Jeffrey Tucker has part of an interview with a one of the monks from the Viennese monastery whose Gregorian Chant CD has hit the top of the chart. The interview is from the San Francisco Chronicle . It is easy to learn chant if you practice 3 and one half hours per day!

Visitors ask...Jubilate Deo Chants (or Chant Books)

I often get searches labeled "Jubilate Deo Chants" or some such. For more info on anything musical, I'd point you first to the MusicaSacra website , the premier website with regard to sacred music. The "Jubilate Deo" book of chants from 1974 and from 1987 is covered nicely by Adoremus here . Note that this link has MP3 versions of some of these chants for you to download. Adoremus has a hymnal with many of these chants available as described here . Some are also Anglicized. Note that G.I.A. Publications has not only the Jubilate Deo Hymnal, but also the entire library including the Graduale Romanum, Graduale Simplex, etc. To examine this series, check this link for G.I.A .

Early Roundup - Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

First, two personal notes. If anyone tried to contact "FIRST THINGS: On the Square" over the weekend, you noticed the link would not function. First Things lost control of its domain, but things are now up and running again. So, all should be functioning again. Second, anyone who has followed this blog knows that I am a creature of "accretion." I love putting more new things up in the right menu. However, if I may be excused, I found a marvelous Latin Liturgical Calendar from the F.S.S.P. and Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary ; it is now in the right menu for your use. NLM: Headlines filled with chant news

Jeffrey Tucker posts a link to an article by Daniel Burke which appeared in the Kansas City Star but is syndicated widely . Here is just a bit: After a public relations push by Pope Benedict XVI, who wants Gregorian chant restored to its “pride of place” in the liturgy, a plainsong renaissance is percolating among U.S. Catholics as well. Nearly 200 scholas — choirs that sing plainsong — have popped up around the country, many in the last five years, according to the Church Music Association of America, or CMA. Sacred music seminars that once drew 40 to 50 people now lure hundreds of Catholic musical directors, organists and singers. And priests-in-training in seminaries across the country are increasingly asking to be educated in the intricacies of Gregorian chant, said William Mahrt, CMA president and sacred-song expert. Please go to the New Liturgical Movement for more .
