Visitors ask...Opus Dei - FSSP - Latin Mass? I'm confused!

I get many searches that show evidence of a misunderstanding between "Opus Dei," "F.S.S.P." and "Latin Mass." So, searches for "Opus Dei Latin Mass" are not uncommon. Here is the link to Opus Dei in the U.S. with all the information you could wish. It is a "personal Prelature" and has nothing to do with the Latin or Traditional Mass. Its founder is a canonized saint, Saint Josemaria Escriva . Is it possible that an Opus Dei priest could say the TLM? Yes! See below! The F.S.S.P. is actually shorthand for the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter or, in Latin, Fraternitas Sacerdotalis Sancti Petri (thus the contraction, FSSP !). This Fraternity says Mass according to the Missal of 1962 (the Traditional Mass, Extraordinary Form or Usus Antiquior to use several acronyms). This group DOES celebrate the "Latin Mass." It is only one of several groups that use this Missal including the Institute of Christ the King Sov

Visitors ask...Where Can I Find a Latin Mass?

This has been answered before but I will have another shot at answering it. This blog tries to keep track of the Traditional Latin (Gregorian or Usus Antiquior ) Mass in the area near the state of Maryland. The link to this post is here and tracks Masses in MD, DC, Northern VA (including Richmond), PA (eastern), WV and DE . I try to keep this info up-to-date. That is because things are fluid. For example, the TLM Mass is offered at St. James the Greater in Charles Town, WV when the Canons of the New Jerusalem are in the area. So, this is listed in the Right Menu under TLM Masses as "occasional ." In the header above, you will see Ecclesia Dei-TLMs . The Coalition in Support of Ecclesia Dei is the " sine qua non " for listing the TLM and does it quarterly. Anyone can go to their site and ask for the list to be sent quarterly. The Coalition lists Masses in every State and in Canada. The Fraternal Society of Saint Peter (F.S.S.P.) tracks its own Apostolates.

Reminder: Saint Bernadette, Silver Spring, MD - Usus Antiquior, Ascension Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Folks, I have a fair number of people who frantically search for the TLM Mass when it is offered at Saint Bernadette's Church in Silver Spring, MD. I gather that it must be a very popular venue. This Mass on the Ascension was posted on this date . I IMPLORE you to remind those at Saint Bernadette's to also check here . You will find the Mass on the calendar for May 21st. The first thing I do when I received notice is to post Masses for St. Bernadette's on the Public Calendar. I hope this assuages some fears!

Emails to me of updates to your Parish would be MOST appreciated . The area covered is only MD, DC, VA, PA, DE and WV. Note too that only Latin or Tridentine Mass Parishes are included here. Visitors ask...Where Can I Find a Latin Mass or Traditional Latin Mass?

Update, February 9th, 2011 Since this was initially posted, I have redesigned this blog. There are menu options in the upper right of the navigation lane. One links to a page which contains many local TLM's that can be found in MD, DC, VA, PA, WV, and DE. Please try here first. Another option in the menu has links to international TLM's . Please try both of these. You will find several options for looking for a TLM. Note that I post new local TLMs the moment I hear of them and the news is authenticated.

Visitors ask...Tridentine Mass, Latin Mass, Archdiocese of Baltimore (or the TLM or Usus Antiquior) in Baltimore or in Maryland

I thought I had covered this adequately, but it still appears in "search strings" in various forms and orders of words! Search engines are "tempermental!" Visitors often ask for the "Tridentine Mass" (or the "Latin Mass," or the "TLM," or " Usus Antiquior ," or "Extraordinary Form") in the Archdiocese of Baltimore (or even more generally, "in Baltimore" or "in Maryland"). Here is the scoop... The ONLY " TLM " or " Tridentine Mass " celebrated in the Archdiocese of Baltimore every Sunday and Holy Day is at Saint Alphonsus Church on Saratoga Street in the heart of Baltimore city. The Sunday TLM Mass there is at 11:30 AM. There is a weekly " Latin Novus Ordo Mass " celebrated at the National Shrine of the Basilica of the Assumption nearby at 9:00 AM each Sunday. Please note that both of these Masses are to be found in the RIGHT MENU and are also contained in th

Visitors ask...Latin Mass...

A constant search string that places people on this blog is " Latin Mass " or derivatives thereof (" Latin Mass Parish ," for example). From that point on, problems seem to occur and the individual becomes lost. The Latin Mass can be the Latin " Novus Ordo " Mass (or Ordinary Form ) since the Missale Romanum (Roman Missal) that we use at Mass is in Latin but translated into the vernacular (i.e., English or Spanish). So, a Latin Mass could be one in the Ordinary Form recited in Latin. Such a one is to be found at the National Shrine of the Basilica of the Assumption each Sunday morning at 9:00 AM . The "other" Latin Mass has many names. The motu proprio , " Summorum Pontificum ," called it the Extraordinary Form . It has been known, however, as the Tridentine Mass , the Tridentine Latin Mass, the Pian Mass (for Pope Pius V) or the Usus Antiquior (if one wishes to denote its antiquity with modifications over the centuries). F

Latin Mass (TLM) Text (Canon) Online or Latin Mass Propers Online

I have dealt with this before, but I still have seekers who are probably looking for the daily or Sunday "Propers" of the Traditional Latin Mass ( TLM ; Extraordinary Form ) online . I say this because the actual Rubrics (and Canon) of the 1962 Missale Romanum is available on a number of forums. One beautiful form is the Sancta Missa site which is meant for education. Others are in the right menu under the Favorites rubric ( see Una Voce; parallel Latin/English Canon ). There is a site which posts the Propers for the TLM in English each day. However, to my knowledge, NO site has fully transposed all the changes of the Missale Romanum 1962 in agreement with the Missal of Pope John XXIII called for in Summorum Pontificum for Sunday Masses (let alone daily Masses). Only a Missal such as the Baronius (F.S.S.P. edition) or the Angelus Missal will be able to assist. There is one site which has begun a rather " Herculean task " and that is to post as many of

Musica Sacra: The Parish Book of Chant

Pre-orders for the Parish Book of Chant can be made here . Also examine the detailed summary of this astounding book. Here is but a bit: Among its features: It contains a complete order of Mass for both the Ordinary form of the Roman Rite and the Extraordinary form, in side-by-side Latin and English. The Ordos include the sung responses of the people and celebrant. In this respect, it serves as an ideal resource for parishes that use both forms or simply hope to emphasize the relationship between them. It contains a large Kyriale, which is a collection of chants that make up the “ordinary” of the Mass: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei. These are the main sung parts of the Mass that are used throughout the year and the parts that all people are invited to learn and sing. This includes the four full Credos in addition to many Mass settings that have been beloved for the dominant part of Catholic history all over the world. It collects 71 Latin chants, with English transla

F.S.S.P. Tridentine (Latin) Mass Sites in North America

At least once a day, someone searches for a listing of the F.S.S.P. locations in the United States or Canada. The Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter celebrates the Tridentine Latin Mass and is located throughout the USA. To find an F.S.S.P. Latin Mass parish by Diocese, go HERE . Note that there is also a FAQ which summarizes many frequent questions (see the link just below the picture of the Tridentine Mass) as well as an entry in the Blogroll and Websites in the right menu which has a link to the F.S.S.P. sites in North America. For international F.S.S.P. locations, search this site .
