Archdiocese of Baltimore Website: Lent 2009

The Archdiocesan website seems to be getting more user friendly by the day. I only wish that a listing of Ash Wednesday Masses was available, but perhaps that will come with time. The site now has a full explanation on Lent and the obligations for fasting and abstinence . There is also a link to the Parishes in the Archdiocese where one can find a Mass location and Mass times as well as Confessions . There is even a list of those Parishes with 24-hour Adoration. Marvelous! Note that Confessions will be offered each Wednesday from 7 PM to 8:30 PM .

Thirsting and Quenching

Ignatius Insight Scoop has a link to the introduction to the book, "Prayer Primer: Igniting a Fire Within" by Fr. Thomas Dubay, S.M . Here is just a portion: Men and women everywhere are hungry and thirsty, voraciously yearning and seeking: rich and poor, wise and foolish, young and old, literate and illiterate, saints and sinners, atheists and agnostics, playboys and prostitutes. Some can explain their inner emptiness in words; most cannot, but everyone experiences it. That inner ache drives all our dreams, desires, and decisions--good and bad. Even your decision to pick up this book and read was triggered by this nameless desire. Our abiding hunger for more than we presently experience does not have to be proved but only explained. Which is what we propose to do right now, before we even begin to think about what prayer is all about. Otherwise you and I cannot understand fully the splendid reality of communing deeply with our Creator and Lord and of our unspeakable

Aggie Catholics-FAQs about Lent

Image
Marcel LeJeune of the Catholic Ministry at Texas A and M has a neat little FAQ posted about Lent . This was linked from Ignatius Insight Scoop and I thought it too neat to pass up: LENT FAQ What is Lent? Lent is a time when the Catholic Church collectively enters into preparation for the celebration of Easter. Lent originally developed as a forty-day retreat, preparing converts to be baptized at the Easter Vigil. Lent is a season of conversion. Conversion is the process of turning away from sin and turning to God. Lent starts with Ash Wednesday (this excludes Sundays, which are not part of the 40 days) and ends on Holy Thursday, the first day of the Triduum, the three holy days before Easter. So why aren't Sundays part of Lent? This is because Sundays are always a day of celebration of Christ's passion and Resurrection, so we celebrate on these days. Does this mean I can "cheat" on Sundays? Since Sundays are not part of the penitential season, you do not
