The Catholic Thing: Alma mater by Ralph McInerny

This is a story recounted by Professor McInerny on Notre Dame du Lac and Project Sycamore . This is a most interesting example of what dedicated alums can do... Here is a link to Project Sycamore . Notre Dame, Our Mother and Queen of Heaven, pray for us!

Visitors ask...How do you pronounce "Notre Dame?"

I think I need to start a new blog! These things are popping up left and right now. I presume the individual was not asking about the University in South Bend, IN which we all "Cheer, cheer for old..." . That has been americanized to "Noter Dame" where the "a" in Dame is a long and hard "a". Some do pronounce the "Notre" as "Nut-rah" realizing its French roots. Here is the pronounciation as given by someone knowledgeable in French. In France, the Cathedral is pronounced as follows: There are plenty of examples where a mispronunciation of a foreign word or phrase has become standard - Notre Dame, for instance. French speakers would pronounce it “no-truh dahm” , but in this country it is and always will be “noh-ter daym” . No doubt the ears of Francophones are offended every time those words are uttered, but it’s become a fixture. Found it here ... Been there too... Amazing!

Visitors ask...what is the Latin for...?

I have occasional searches that land here for the Latin word(s) for a specific term. Someone today was searching for the Latin term for the English verb, "to sow." There is no substitute for a first-rate Latin dictionary such as The Lewis and Short Dictionary or Gildersleeve's Latin Grammar . However, this is a very nice site at Notre Dame offering various options . I will allow you to do the exploring; there is a great deal of good information here and it is a fun site. If one clicks on the hyperlink for English to Latin , and then enters the search term "sow" (note, don't enter the verb, "to sow," or the search engine will find Latin meanings for "to," the results are: sow baccar (bacchar) -aris n. and baccaris -is , f. [a plant], perhaps [ sow bread]. consero (1) -serere -sevi -situm [to sow , plant]. Transf., [to cover]. consitio -onis f. [sowing , planting]. consitor -oris m. [sower , planter]. consitura -ae f. [sowing , p

U.S. bishops shun Notre Dame venue due to V-Monologues

Catholic News Agency reports this development from the USCCB and Notre Dame : A theological seminar for Catholic bishops has been relocated from the campus of the University of Notre Dame in response to the school’s planned performance of the play “The Vagina Monologues,” the South Bend Tribune reports. The seminar, a meeting of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Doctrine, includes Notre Dame faculty who act as advisors and is co-sponsored by the university’s Institute for Church Life. Instead of taking place on the Notre Dame campus, it has been moved to a convent of the Sisters of St. Francis in Mishawaka, Indiana. Seven bishops and archbishops are members of the Committee on Doctrine, while its consultants include Notre Dame theology department chair Dr. John C. Cavadini and the Archbishop of Chicago Cardinal Francis George. Read more here... One gets the feeling that a struggle is ongoing between the secular and the sublime on the same campus!

Classical Liturgy Society Formed at Notre Dame

Shawn Tribe posts some excellent news coming from Notre Dame in South Bend, IN . We wish to inform readers... that a group of alumni is in the process of forming a society of members of the Notre Dame community (alumni, students, faculty, and friends of the University) interested in any aspect of the Tridentine Rite, including, by way of example only, its history, theological and philosophical underpinnings, spiritual implications, and the various arts, such as music, architecture, and fine art, that are used to adorn it. An extraordinary liturgy returns to campus

A hat tip to Fr. Z. He reports today on the TLM now being celebrated at Notre Dame du Lac in South Bend, IN . Here is part of the story by John Nagy in the Notre Dame Magazine: "It's very exciting," says senior Mary Elizabeth Walter. "Had you told me three years ago we would be having the Tridentine Mass here on campus I would have said 'Yeah, right, I wish.'" For years, pockets of Catholics have secured permission from local Church authorities to celebrate the Mass using the 1962 Missal of Blessed John XXIII. The reforms issued under Paul VI had turned the priest toward the congregation, allowed translation of the entire Mass into the vernacular, changed other important customs and prompted reactions from the faithful that ran the spectrum from elation to acceptance to devastation. Unlike most Catholics born after Vatican
