All Saints Sisters of the Poor Attended a High Mass Yesterday at St. Alphonsus Church in Baltimore

You may recall that I posted that a group of Sisters from the All Saints Sisters of the Poor were to attend a High Mass yesterday at St. Alphonsus Church in Baltimore. I got this report and wanted to share it with you. I would have attended but had a family commitment elsewhere. It sounds as if I was a wonderful day! Thanks to J.! All, Today well over 200 people attended the High Mass (Extraordinary Form) at St. Alphonsus Church, and eight All Saints Sisters of the Poor came, with the front two pews on Our Lady’s side reserved for the Sisters. The polyphonic choir sang hymns such as Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus and Handel’s Lord I Trust Thee as well as favorites such as Soul of My Savior and O Bone Jesu . Many faithful stayed for the light brunch for the Sisters in the church/rectory courtyard. It was a wonderful occasion. For many of our children, it was the first time they met Catholic sisters in full, traditional habits. Many of those in attendance seemed anxio

Catholic Review Online: Monsignor Bastress awarded Redemptorists’ highest honor

Anyone who knows Msgr. Arthur Bastress--the kind priest who celebrates the TLM each Sunday and who continues to hear Confessions before the 12:10 daily N.O. Mass--knows he is a holy priest. This story was posted today by George P. Matysek, Jr. who reveals that Msgr. has been made an "Oblate of the Most Holy Redeemer ." In recognition of Monsignor Bastress’s work at the parish and his support for the sainthood causes of St. Neumann and Blessed Seelos, the Redemptorists enrolled Monsignor Bastress as an “Oblate of the Most Holy Redeemer” during a Sept. 12 Mass at the parish attended by Auxiliary Bishop Denis J. Madden. “It’s the greatest honor the Redemptorists can bestow,” said Redemptorist Father Patrick Woods, leader of his religious community’s New York-based Province of Baltimore. “It makes him an honorary Redemptorist,” Father Woods said. “It’s kind of like a knighthood.” Father Woods noted that only one or two people a year are nominated for the honor. Only the Redempt

Saint Alphonsus Church Adding TLM on First Saturdays at 12:10 AM

I just received this email from someone in the Gregorian Society and I'm delighted to pass it along. It seems that Msgr. Arthur Bastress will begin a First Saturday TLM at 12:10 PM. Please spread the word! Yesterday, Monsignor Bastress--pastor of St. Alphonsus Church in Baltimore, MD --offered a First Saturday Traditional Latin Mass as part of the regularly scheduled First Saturday devotions at the venerable church. He was evidently pleased with the turn-out (~ 50 people) so he announced that henceforth, the Extraordinary Form Mass would be offered every First Saturday at St. Alphonsus Church at 12:10 PM . The Mass is followed by five decades of the Holy Rosary and by the Divine Mercy Chaplet prayed before the exposed Blessed Sacrament. The services conclude with Benediction. Please spread the news far and wide! The Traditional Mass is offered every Sunday at St. Alphonsus Church at 11:30 AM and on Holy Days at 7:00 PM. Mass is also offered on special occasion (e.g

I thought I had covered this adequately, but it still appears in "search strings" in various forms and orders of words! Search engines are "tempermental!" Visitors often ask for the "Tridentine Mass" (or the "Latin Mass," or the "TLM," or " Usus Antiquior ," or "Extraordinary Form") in the Archdiocese of Baltimore (or even more generally, "in Baltimore" or "in Maryland"). Dignare Me: Easter Vigil at St. Alphonsus, Baltimore

I am indebted to The New Liturgical Movement for pointing me to this beautiful blog, Dignare Me Laudare Te, Virgo Sacrata . "Matthew" has a beautiful photoessay on the Easter Vigil at Saint Alphonsus Church in Baltimore . The celebrant was Monsignor Arthur W. Bastress . Matthew also included this comment: For the third time in four years, I traveled up to St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Baltimore, Maryland for the Easter Vigil according to the 1962 Roman Missal (Traditional Latin Mass). This church is a favorite of mine, not merely because of the beautiful Gothic architecture and decoration, but also because of its connection to St. John Neumann, who was pastor there before becoming Bishop of Philadelphia. He was also consecrated a bishop in this church. By "travel up," I assume he means from Arlington, VA which is to the south. It is a gorgeous Church as these photos show . Thanks, Matthew! He also posts photos from the Easter Sunday Mass at Georgetown Un

An extraordinary liturgy returns to campus

A hat tip to Fr. Z. He reports today on the TLM now being celebrated at Notre Dame du Lac in South Bend, IN . Here is part of the story by John Nagy in the Notre Dame Magazine: "It's very exciting," says senior Mary Elizabeth Walter. "Had you told me three years ago we would be having the Tridentine Mass here on campus I would have said 'Yeah, right, I wish.'" For years, pockets of Catholics have secured permission from local Church authorities to celebrate the Mass using the 1962 Missal of Blessed John XXIII. The reforms issued under Paul VI had turned the priest toward the congregation, allowed translation of the entire Mass into the vernacular, changed other important customs and prompted reactions from the faithful that ran the spectrum from elation to acceptance to devastation. Unlike most Catholics born after Vatican
