How and Where Do I Learn to Teach Latin?

After reading this story , I wanted to return to this subject as Latin is definitely coming back into vogue. Not only is the language the parent of the Romance languages, it is of immeasurable help in learning English vocabulary, in understanding terms in Law, Medicine and other fields, and, of course, for the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. I surveyed the "field" so to speak in the greater Baltimore area of those Universities with which I am familiar. Many offer excellent programs in the Classics with Latin interspersed, but I hoped to find a course of study with a Degree in Latin suitable to teach the language at the secondary level. At the University of Maryland, College Park, the Classics Department has such a course of study . Note that there is an undergraduate Latin major which leads to a degree suitable for teaching Latin . FOCUS - Fellowship of Catholic University Students

FOCUS describes itself in this way : Founded in 1998 by Curtis Martin, FOCUS, The Fellowship of Catholic University Students, is a national outreach to college campuses, to secular and Catholic schools. Through small group Bible studies, large group leadership training, and one-on-one discipleship, FOCUS brings the fullness of life and truth in the Catholic Church to college students and gives the tools to help them share this good news with their friends. FOCUS is working to play a vital role in the new evangelization called for by Pope John Paul II. FOCUS teaches recent college graduates, trains them in the teachings of the Church, Scripture and practical aspects of ministry, and sends them out typically in teams of four to serve on college campuses. FOCUS staff members make an initial two-year commitment to this full-time work. FOCUS works with the blessing of the local bishop and the support of the pastor and existing ministry(ies). FOCUS requires the blessing of t...

A return to tradition for campus Catholics

Here is a nice article on the Latin Mass and what is happening at the University of Maryland, College Park published in the on-line version of the Diamondback . A hat tip to Fr. Z. and his blog, "What Does the Prayer Really Say" for this article from the archives of early December. Students at the Catholic Student Center are trying to infuse the present-day Mass with some customs from the past. For the past two months, students at the CSC have gathered each Wednesday before the evening Mass, or the Catholic worship service, to learn prayers and portions of the service in Latin, the formal language of the Catholic Church. During the same time period, four students learned the traditional songs and chants of the church as part of the Schola Cantorum, an all-male choir with a name that means "school of song" in Latin. The semester's work culminated in an extra Mass celebrated Nov. 30 in Latin with music provided by the schola. Approximately 25 students ...
