Visitors ask...Opus Dei - FSSP - Latin Mass? I'm confused!

I get many searches that show evidence of a misunderstanding between "Opus Dei," "F.S.S.P." and "Latin Mass." So, searches for "Opus Dei Latin Mass" are not uncommon. Here is the link to Opus Dei in the U.S. with all the information you could wish. It is a "personal Prelature" and has nothing to do with the Latin or Traditional Mass. Its founder is a canonized saint, Saint Josemaria Escriva . Is it possible that an Opus Dei priest could say the TLM? Yes! See below! The F.S.S.P. is actually shorthand for the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter or, in Latin, Fraternitas Sacerdotalis Sancti Petri (thus the contraction, FSSP !). This Fraternity says Mass according to the Missal of 1962 (the Traditional Mass, Extraordinary Form or Usus Antiquior to use several acronyms). This group DOES celebrate the "Latin Mass." It is only one of several groups that use this Missal including the Institute of Christ the King Sov

As visitors from Ireland appear from time to time, I hope this post will help to give St. Conleth's Catholic Heritage Association a boost. And yes, I will subscribe to your RSS feed. Slainte! ~D.v.

Ascension Thursday, Traditional (Gregorian, Tridentine) Masses Locally

Some are seeking the location of a "Traditional Latin Mass" (Gregorian, Tridentine, Usus Antiquior) for the Feast Day, Thursday. I use the term TLM after a discussion on the blog "What Does the Prayer Really Say?" and this was the consensus choice over other choices. Saint Alphonsus Church in Baltimore has the TLM scheduled on Thursday night at 7:00 PM. In addition, on Thursday, there is a Solemn High Mass being celebrated at St. John the Baptist in Front Royal, VA at 7 PM, and a TLM at Saint Bernadette Church in Silver Spring at 7:30 PM. Here are the Propers for that Mass, Missa 'Viri Galilaei' ( Tridentine Latin Rite Missal Project ). Please let me point out that two of the Masses above are posted on the Events Calendar used by this blog . In addition, kindly note that the link to this calendar is also in the "header" (the blue field containing the blog title) as well. Finally, anyone may post an event on this calendar! When someone does

Visitors ask...Where Can I Find a Latin Mass?

This has been answered before but I will have another shot at answering it. This blog tries to keep track of the Traditional Latin (Gregorian or Usus Antiquior ) Mass in the area near the state of Maryland. The link to this post is here and tracks Masses in MD, DC, Northern VA (including Richmond), PA (eastern), WV and DE . I try to keep this info up-to-date. That is because things are fluid. For example, the TLM Mass is offered at St. James the Greater in Charles Town, WV when the Canons of the New Jerusalem are in the area. So, this is listed in the Right Menu under TLM Masses as "occasional ." In the header above, you will see Ecclesia Dei-TLMs . The Coalition in Support of Ecclesia Dei is the " sine qua non " for listing the TLM and does it quarterly. Anyone can go to their site and ask for the list to be sent quarterly. The Coalition lists Masses in every State and in Canada. The Fraternal Society of Saint Peter (F.S.S.P.) tracks its own Apostolates.

Reminder: Saint Bernadette, Silver Spring, MD - Usus Antiquior, Ascension Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Folks, I have a fair number of people who frantically search for the TLM Mass when it is offered at Saint Bernadette's Church in Silver Spring, MD. I gather that it must be a very popular venue. This Mass on the Ascension was posted on this date . I IMPLORE you to remind those at Saint Bernadette's to also check here . You will find the Mass on the calendar for May 21st. The first thing I do when I received notice is to post Masses for St. Bernadette's on the Public Calendar. I hope this assuages some fears!

Traditional Latin Mass in Maryland - New Blog Feature: Special Events Calendar

For some time, I've wondered how to integrate a calendar into this blog that would be of use for Special Events or non-recurring events . Usus Antiquior or Tridentine Masses scheduled weekly can be assembled in a menu ( SEE RIGHT MENU NAVBAR, for example ) and linked to Parish websites. However, what of the occasional special Mass, colloquium or musical event ? So many of these are missed when posted here unless someone knows of it in advance. The New Liturgical Movement has found a solution using a calendar embedded into their blog page . Events are self-reported and require approval by the moderator. This is a huge blog, however, affiliated with the CMAA, receives millions of "hits" and handles international events. So, the local may be lost in the shuffle. In the header to this blog, you will now see the following: Special Event Usus Antiquior Calendar for MD, DC, VA, DE, PA and WV (opens New Window) This calendar is one I've created for TLM events in t
