NLM: Benedict XVI proclaims that baroque is back - Catholic Herald Online

Shawn Tribe of the NLM has a nice article on the return of 'Baroque' to Church vestments . The reaction is quite interesting to say the least.

Reminder: TLM Latin Holy Week Masses

This was posted previously, but I thought I'd do it once more . Click this link for a previous post summarizing the schedules here (Baltimore) and in D.C. I have posted the schedules for Saint Alphonsus and for Saint James the Greater in Charles Town, WV. DC Catholic has a link to the DC calendar of events. Also note the list of Parishes on the menu bar to the right . Many have their bulletins online on their website and so will have their particular Holy Week schedules. Also, check here . This is a search from MassTimes.org and lists ALL Latin Masses in the region (both the TLM and the Ordinary Form). This may help you narrow your search. Note that Silver Spring was chosen arbitrarily as the "center" for this search. Finally, here is a list of all Parishes in the Baltimore metro region . The times include Sunday Mass and Vigils. Many have web pages. If you know the zip code you are visiting, you should be able to find a "close fit."

Morning Roundup - Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Gregor Kollmorgen of The New Liturgical Movement has some "insider" information from Father Sean Finnegan of Heralds of the Gospel as to why the Papal Liturgies have changed so noticeably. Read his take on this here . Father John Zuhlsdorf of WDTPRS has posts (a) updating info on the Holy Father's new pastoral staff , (b) a marvelous article on Cardinal Arinze, Prefect of CDWDS, and his take on inculturation , and (c) a " quaeritur " concerning whether failing to put water in the chalice with the wine makes the consecration invalid .

The Mountain Echo: Seminary life attracts students

The Mountain Echo is the campus newspaper for Mount Saint Mary's University . Mount Saint Mary's is fairly unique in being both a University and also the location of a major Seminary of the Archdiocese of Baltimore . On March 13th, the Seminary at "the Mount" opened its doors to interested students. Irina Kuchevski posted this story today . Here is a brief snippet: Fr. Leo also discussed finding an order to prayers and the four pillars that are followed by the seminarians. The four pillars are spiritual, pastoral, human and intellectual. A question that seemed to be on everyone's minds was how a man learns to be a parish priest. The process of becoming a parish priest requires being sent on location. Monsignor Swetland emphasized the importance of forming priests that are well trained in the understanding of human nature. Each person gets further, beyond justice to mercy. Swetland also mentioned the process of intellectual formation that encompasses languages

Catholic Review Online: Chrism Mass message is food for the soul

The Chrism Mass was held Monday, March 17th in our Archdiocese at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Baltimore . Today, His Excellency Archbishop Edwin O'Brien in his column, " Thoughts on Our Church " writes a beautiful column for his brother priests and for all of us . Th e last several years, as each very special Chrism Mass approaches, I have found food for the soul in a 2002 Chrism Mass homily offered by Baltimore’s proud native son Bishop Victor Galeone of St. Augustine. I thought I should share it with you and am grateful to my good friend, the Bishop of St. Augustine, for permission to do so: "I’d like you to come back with me to the spring of 1974 – back to the town of Andahuaylas, high in the Andes Mountains. At the time, I was serving as a missionary in Peru. This particular Sunday afternoon, I was visiting our sick parishioners in the town hospital. In the men’s ward, I came across Oswaldo – a Lutheran minister who was visiting from Lima. He had taken i

WDTPRS: PRAYERCAzT 23: Passion of St. John (Good Friday – 1962 Missale Romanum)

As you may know, last week Fr. John of WDTPRS released the Passion of Saint Matthew as a Podcazt just before Palm Sunday . It had the Passionalia --all three parts were sung by him. It is archived last week on this blog. Today he has released again the Podcazt for the Passion of Saint John before Good Friday . Just wanted you to know it is available in MP3! Finally, some of you are stopping by and failing to find my prior post on the Latin readings for the Triduum ! As I stated just a few days ago, only a written Missal (like the new Baronius F.S.S.P. edition, Summorum Pontificum ) will have ALL the approved text . The next best thing is from the Tridentine Latin Rite Missal Project . I haven't checked all the text word for word, but the "post-1955 links" should "be close to rendering" what has been approved by Summorum Pontificum . That is not a guarantee, however. Note also that this is a work in progress.
