EWTN Classics: The Prayer of Lady Macbeth: How the Contraceptive Mentality Has Neutered Religious Life

Some messages are classics. Rev. Paul V. Mankowski, S.J., Professor of Biblical Studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, published this article in the Spring 1993 issue of "Faith & Reason" . It is now in the EWTN Library and it still resonates with profound truth. [...] Suppose for a moment that a Catholic comes to believe that the teaching Church is wrong in condemning contraception but right about everything else. How does he judge the Church wrong in the one case? As we have seen, by reference to some standard that is more reliable than the Church. But how does he judge the Church to be right in the other million-and-one instances? Obviously, only in virtue of the same standard by which he found her defective. It is absurd, not to say insane, to claim that one obeys, or is faithful to, the Church in those areas in which he happens to agree with her because "happens to agree" is the operative phrase. If my pocket calculator has prove

Afternoon Roundup - Friday, June 13th, 2008

The news has been making its way around the blogosphere ( see RORATE CAELI, for example ). Now, two sources have both confirmed that the Neocatechumenal Way has received final approval of its statutes. Both the Catholic News Agency and Zenit are carrying the story.

First Things: On the Square >> Theodicy and the Narrow Escape Syndrome

Fr. Richard John Neuhaus posts a wonderful essay on "theodicy" and the "God problem ." Any essay that brings in the agonies of Ivan Karamazov is well worth reading! "I try to spell out the implications of that in my book Death on a Friday Afternoon . But that book is not chiefly about theodicy. On that subject, there is another recent book that I would warmly recommend to James Wood and, if he could stifle his flippancy long enough to read it with care, to Bart Ehrman. It is David Bentley Hart’s The Doors of the Sea: Where Was God in the Tsunami? The Doors of the Sea was published in 2005 in the aftermath of the great Asian tsunami that killed an estimated 225,000 people. Throughout his reflection, Hart wrestles with the hauntingly brilliant statement of the theodicy question posed by Dostoyevsky’s Ivan Karamazov. Herewith a few of the things Hart says in this very impressive little book: “God has fashioned creatures in his image so that they might be join

Catholic Review Online: Hopefully, A Meeting of Minds

Each week, H.E. Archbishop O'Brien posts a column called " Thoughts on Our Church " in the Catholic Review. The column always deals with a variety of topical subjects and is posted as a link from this blog when possible (electrical storms notwithstanding!). This week, in a column dated June 10th, His Excellency discusses with us"apostolic movements ": A celebrated and most valuable outgrowth of the Second Vatican Council has been the rise in the number of “apostolic movements” that have sprung up in the Church under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Each centered in a unique spirituality, these movements nourish strongly committed laity with the teachings and sacraments of the Church, thus enabling them to carry out their vocation “to seek the kingdom of God by engaging in tempered affairs and directing them according to God’s will” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 898). Whispers in the Loggia: Athwart "Bondage," Yelling "Stop"

Rocco Palmo of " Whispers in the Loggia " discusses the US Conference of Bishops . To cite Mr. Palmo: "In keeping with longstanding tradition, however, no meeting of the body would be complete without some showdown on the liturgy -- a topic that, in recent years, has focused on the approval of a new wholesale translation of the Roman Missal, which current projections seem to be eyeing for implementation in late 2010."
