Visitors ask...Belmont Abbey or the Monastery at Belmont Abbey - is there a difference?

A perennial search for this blog is "Belmont Abbey." It is usually paired with "Tridentine," "Masses," etc.

Belmont Abbey College is a college located in Charlotte, NC run by the Benedictines. Therefore, searches which pair "Belmont Abbey" with "Masses" are likely to lead to a dead end or to an article on how the College decided to change its health plan for religious reasons.

The Monastery at Belmont Abbey is located on the campus of Belmont Abbey College:

Belmont Abbey is a monastery of about twenty men, founded in 1876. Its members pray and work together according to the teachings of the Gospel and the wisdom of Saint Benedict. The Abbey is situated on a 700-acre campus in the Piedmont area of North Carolina. While it is positioned near the conveniences of urban life, it has preserved the benefits of its somewhat removed location, which helps buffer it from the distractions of ordinary life. Saint Benedict says that monks' good works should be practiced in the environment of the monastery; thus the life and labors at Belmont are centered upon the Abbey campus.
The Monastery Service Schedule is shown here. Note that as Benedictines, the monks would follow the Benedictine Rule. I am not certain if they celebrate the Novus Ordo or not. I did use the Monastery search engine and the term "Tridentine" yields no results. Instead, the Mass is listed as "Conventual."

Comments

  1. The TLM is not presently celebrated at Belmont Abbey. "Conventual" simply refers to the monastic community's daily Eucharist, which is celebrated according to the Novus Ordo.

  2. Thank you for the clarification, David. I know that the Benedictine Order strictly observes the Rule of St. Benedict with regards to the Divine Office which appears on their Liturgy page as to times.
