Newsflash | The Guadalupe Radio Network is bringing Catholic Radio to Washington D.C.

Eric Sammons of the blog, The Divine Life , brought this to our attention last week. Here is the update to the Guadalupe Radio Network website : The Guadalupe Radio Network is bringing Catholic Radio to Washington D.C. With great thanks and praise to almighty God as we want to announce that the nation's capitol will soon be the home of another Guadalupe Radio Network station. On May 5th WMET 1160 AM will begin broadcasting Catholic Radio 24 hours a day. And what an amazing impact this station will have in bringing souls closer to our Lord and the holy Saints, an impact that has the potential to reach far beyond the immediate listening area. WMET is a powerful 50,000 watt AM radio station which will blanket all of Washington D.C. and the surrounding area with the beautiful message of Christ's Good News through His One, Holy Catholic Church. In fact, the signal covers Washington DC and stretches on into Baltimore, Annapolis and beyond Arlington VA, along with doze

Sunday Mass Times for the Archdiocese of Baltimore

This link goes to the website of the Archdiocese of Baltimore . It is for Sunday Masses. All you need to do is to specific a "TIME" in the toggle box and the Parish having that Mass will show up. I would check to be sure that it is being held on Easter, but I am betting it will be. This goes to the Archdiocese of Washingto n and this goes to the Diocese of Arlington . Both have similar search boxes for Mass Times. Happy Easter and I hope you make Mass!

Visitors ask...Syro-Malabar Catholic Missions in the Area?

I have had this question on several occasions, but was unable to find anything on the Archdiocesan website. That would not be a surprise as I believe the Syro-Malabar Church falls under its own Bishop . With some searching, I found this is true and located in Chicago. With a bit of searching, I found a Syromalabar Mission of Baltimore at this website . This gives more explanation about the Syro-Malabar Church . And this link has the list of services and the location of the Church . The Syro Malabar Diocese of Chicago has a list of Churches and Missions . Note that this list includes a Church in Hagerstown, MD but the website link directs one to a Parish in Ohio. St. Mary Catholic Church 224 W. Washington Street Hagerstown, MD 21740 Please inquire locally about this Mission in Hagerstown and whether it is still active.

The Black Biretta: Humanae Vitae: two score later

Father John Trigilio gives an overview of the Convocation of the Confraternity of Catholic Clergy held in Baltimore this past week . Father also announces the 6 resolutions which passed unanimously. It is a must read.

Mary's-Land: "Terra Mariae"

Image
Maryland is one of the 13 original colonies and named after Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of King Charles I . Maryland got its name from Henrietta Maria. She was the daughter of King Henry IV of France and Marie de Médici of Italy. In 1625, Henrietta Maria married King Charles I and became Queen of England. King Charles I's choice to make Henrietta Maria his wife was controversial because she and her family were Roman Catholics rather than members of the Church of England. Queen Henrietta Maria was unpopular with many English people and members of Parliament because she assisted English Catholics like the Calverts. The Calverts chose to name their new province in North American, Mary-land, (“Terra Mariae”) in the queen's honor. Henrietta Maria's life was difficult due to the English Civil Wars that occurred during her husband's reign. She had to flee England while her husband was on trial for treason against his nation. She went to the Netherlands to raise money a

WDTPRS: Washington, DC and Baltimore: Upcoming Solemn TLMs

Father John Zuhlsdorf has posted an email with the two "major events" for this coming weekend . First, there is the F.S.S.P. Mass to be held in the Crypt at the Basilica of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in D.C. on Saturday, June 7th . And second, there is a Solemn High Mass at Saint Alphonsus Church in Baltimore on Sunday, June 8th with Fr. Romanoski celebrating . Please see his post. Both locations can be found in the menu on the right under Blogroll and Favorite Websites.

Visitors ask...Tridentine Mass, Latin Mass, Archdiocese of Baltimore (or the TLM or Usus Antiquior) in Baltimore or in Maryland

I thought I had covered this adequately, but it still appears in "search strings" in various forms and orders of words! Search engines are "tempermental!" Visitors often ask for the "Tridentine Mass" (or the "Latin Mass," or the "TLM," or " Usus Antiquior ," or "Extraordinary Form") in the Archdiocese of Baltimore (or even more generally, "in Baltimore" or "in Maryland"). Here is the scoop... The ONLY " TLM " or " Tridentine Mass " celebrated in the Archdiocese of Baltimore every Sunday and Holy Day is at Saint Alphonsus Church on Saratoga Street in the heart of Baltimore city. The Sunday TLM Mass there is at 11:30 AM. There is a weekly " Latin Novus Ordo Mass " celebrated at the National Shrine of the Basilica of the Assumption nearby at 9:00 AM each Sunday. Please note that both of these Masses are to be found in the RIGHT MENU and are also contained in th

Visitors ask...College of Notre Dame and TLM, Shepherdstown, WV

A visitor is seeking information on the College of Notre Dame. This causes some problems because the more famous "University located in South Bend, IN" is liable to pop up unless you use the correct search string. Here is the link . It is located just north of Loyola College on Charles Street in Baltimore on a beautiful campus . Another visitor appears to be searching for info on the TLM at Saint James the Greater in Charles Town, WV. The seeker is using Shepherdstown in the search which is nearby it seems. Here is the latest info . The next TLM is this Sunday at 4:00 PM according to my source.

Visitors ask...Sunday Afternoon Mass in the Baltimore Region

UPDATE: August 10th, 2008. Here is a list of EVENING Masses in D.C. I may as well link the two posts together ! I have folks looking for afternoon Mass in D.C. too! Someone from a commercial concern inquired about Sunday Masses in the afternoon. I assume this is due to a work schedule. Here is a listing from MassTimes.org for Sunday centering on Baltimore, MD . This is from noon onwards . To find an afternoon Mass around D.C., one would have to change the "center of search" to Silver Spring, MD, for example. 12:00 PM St. Mary of the Assumption St. Isaac Jogues St. Gabriel Sacred Heart of Mary Our Lady of Mount Carmel Our Lady of Fatima Immaculate Heart of Mary 12:15 PM St. Ursula St. Michael 12:30 PM Our Lady of Victory Our Lady of Hope Mary Our Queen 1:30 PM Holy Rosary Church 2:00 PM Annunciation 3:00 PM Our Lady of Pompei

Whispers in the Loggia: "In the beginning"

Today, Rocco Palmo of Whispers in the Loggia posts a story on the religious history of Baltimore, the "Premier See ." It is a beautiful story and a must read which includes videos. Mr. Palmo also includes a link to the homily of Archbishop Edwin O'Brien (found on the Archdiocesan webpage), and a podcast link for the lecture by Archbishop Timothy Dolan of Milwaukee (the first lecture in a series). Thanks, Rocco!

In Search Of: Early Morning Masses, Baltimore, MD

Well, some would swear I "set up" this story! Just after posting how to find an "Evening Sunday Mass" in Washington, D.C., I dashed down to see EWTN's Raymond Arroyo and his "Interview with the President." I returned to find someone from the Baltimore suburbs searching for an "early Mass in Baltimore!" Following the procedure I went through below , I plugged in "Monday" at MassTimes.org and found the following list for our friend: 6:30 AM St. Thomas More St. Mark Sacred Heart of Jesus Little Flower 6:40 AM Immaculate Heart of Mary 7:00 AM St. Thomas Aquinas St. Pius the Tenth St. Michael the Archangel St. Jude Shrine St. Alphonsus Sacred Heart Mary Our Queen 7:25 AM St. Ignatius (Jesuit Church) 7:30 AM St. Francis of Assisi St. Brigid St. Athanasius Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary 7:45 AM St. William of York St. Mark 8:00 AM St. Wenceslaus St. Ursula St.
