NLM: Osservatore Romano on New FSSP Rome Parish

Gregor Kollmorgen has translated an important story from " L'Osservatore Romano " concerning the new F.S.S.P. Parish established in Rome . The full title of Kollmorgen's post is "Osservatore Romano on New FSSP Rome Parish - An Example for Dioceses the World Over." This paragraph emphasizes the importance of the story: "This is an act disposed by the Pope for the diocese of Rome which has a value in itself, in the progressive path of putting into application the motu proprio on the Roman liturgy before the reform carried out in 1970," explains the president of the Vatican commission which deals with relations with the faithful attached to the previous Latin liturgical tradition, especially those so far in various ways related to the fraternity founded by Msgr Marcel Lefebvre who wish to remain united to the Successor of Peter in the Catholic Church. But - adds Cardinal Castrillón Hoyos - "the realization of a personal parish also has an

WDTPRS: Fr. Z rants & Augustine on Pentecost and the Cardinal on YouTube

Father Zuhlsdorf explains why this "ought to be" the Monday in the Octave of Pentecost on one of his PODCAzTs while citing Saint Augustine. He also has a link to a YouTube of Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos speaking in the Introduction of the F.S.S.P.'s TLM training DVD on the TLM and His Eminence's views on its availability. Fascinating!

WDTPRS: Italian magazine Jesus interviews Card. Castrillon Hoyos of the P.C. “Ecclesia Dei”

The interview covered by the publication, " Jesus ," was translated and posted yesterday by Gregor Kollmorgen of The New Liturgical Movement and linked here yesterday. Today, the story has been covered all over the blogosphere. This follow-up post by Father John Zuhlsdorf of What Does the Prayer Really Say is critical to your understanding of the implications of this story as it is a detailed commentary on what was asked and said . In part, it is important because Fr. Zuhlsdorf was affiliated with the PCED for which Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos is speaking. In short, this is ESSENTIAL READING . The Cardinal states at one point about a sentiment being the "mens" of the Pope (L., mens , mind). We can trust, then, that H.E. knows the "mind" of the Holy Father.

NLM: Cardinal Castrillón: Tradition Without Contestation

Gregor Kollmorgen of the New Liturgical Movement has a very insightful post . It arises from a liberal journal called " Jesus " and features an interview with Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos of the PCED. Here is part of the interview on the motu proprio , Summorum Pontificum : What are the questions that have arrived and would deserve an answer? "The first regards Latin, because - they say - to celebrate in a language which you do not know is not convenient. Unfortunately, the seminarians, but also some priests, have not studied it and therefore it is difficult for them to celebrate in the extraordinary form. To do so one should at least know the canon of the Mass , the part of the consecration. We in "Ecclesia Dei" are equipping ourselves and we are preparing meetings, courses and means of electronic communication for a deep knowledge of the earlier liturgy. Some courses are already being held in France, Germany, Brazil, Central America and the United Stat

WDTPRS >> PCED’s Card. Castrillon Hoyos: celebrate TLM in parishes even when it isn’t requested NOTE: So, according to Card. Castrillion Hoyos, the Holy Father desires that the TLM be a normal part of parish life. He also says that priests should offer it in their parishes even if there is no specific request for it. This is really huge. Some people have contended that priests may not celebrate a public TLM in their parish unless they have first received a petition from a "stable group" (though that not a good translation of what Summorum Pontificum has in the Latin). Then some bishops, contra legem, have treid to limit the public celebrations of TLM ’s even more by trying to impose a minimum number of people in such a "stable group". Now we are getting the sense that priests should simply start using the 1962 Missale Romanum in their parishes so that people can get to know it and benefit from this gift. A free copy will be available to any priest or seminarian who reserves the video on its web site. Evening Roundup - Second Sunday after Easter, April 6th, 2008

In the roundup for yesterday evening, I indicated that a post by Fr. Zuhlsdorf on What Does the Prayer Really Say? was a "must read." It involved a detailed post concerning the Traditional Latin Mass by a distinguished Italian priest, Fr. Pierro Cantoni, who has an excellent take on Summorum Pontificum . Today, Fr. Zuhlsdorf has a post on a story by the Catholic Herald of the U.K. In short, as reported by WDTPRS , Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos has "reconfirmed" that priests do not need the permission of their Bishops to use the extraordinary form of the Mass. The full details are here ! Must read . Finally, Fr. Zuhlsdorf has some beautiful photos and commentary on the TLM from Hanceville, AL for those unable to see the Missa Cantata this morning .

Catholic Review Online: two stories of interest

The Catholic Review is the Archdiocesan newspaper of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. The online edition carries two stories of interest : Cindy Wooden reports that the liberalization of the Tridentine Mass is bearing fruit . The story deals with the interview of Cardinal Castrillon-Hoyos to L'Osservatore Romano widely reported on traditional blogs. George P. Matysek, Jr. reports on a tour by Archbishop O'Brien through the Carroll County area . His Excellency praised the Eucharistic Adoration that is prominent at some parishes such as Saint John's in Westminster and called for an increase in religious vocations.

NLM: Interview with Cardinal Castrillón carries some important comments

Gregor Kollmorgen of The New Liturgical Movement carries an interview from L'Osservatore Romano with Cardinal Castrillon-Hoyos with some fascinating disclosures . Here is just one: [...] "The pope offers to the Church a treasure which is spiritual, cultural, religious and catholic. We have received letters of agreement also from prelates of the orthodox churches, from anglican and protestant faithtful. Lastly there are some priests of the Fraternity of Saint Pius X who, exceptionally, are searching to regularize their position. Some of them have already signed the formula of adhesion. We are informed that there are traditionalist lay faithful, close to the Fraternity, who have begun to frequent Masses in the older rite offered in the churches of the dioceses." His full translation is here .

Schismatic Groups Coming Home, Reports Vatican

A hat tip to Rorate Caeli which posted a link to this story from Zenit regarding the Society of St. Pius X . Cardinal Assesses Impact of "Summorum Pontificum" By Mary Shovlain ROME, JAN. 13, 2008 ( Zenit.org ).- Six months after Benedict XVI issued an apostolic letter on the extended use of the 1962 missal, the Vatican says it is seeing fruits of reconciliation with Catholics who objected to the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council. "Summorum Pontificum," allows for more availability of the Latin-language Mass, a rite the document dubs the "extraordinary form." The letter, issued "motu proprio" (on his own initiative), brought attention to the situation of schismatic groups such as the Society of St. Pius X, that refuse to celebrate the "Novus Ordo" Mass established by Vatican II. Cardinal Darío Castrillón Hoyos told ZENIT that after the June 7 document, one group has already asked to return to full communion with the Church
