First Things - Pulling the Plug on the Conscience Clause by Wesley J. Smith

This blog often cites articles from " Secondhand Smoke ," the blog written by Wesley J. Smith on FIRST THINGS Online. This link is to an article in the December issue of the magazine, First Things . It is a sobering article and a must read. Mr. Smith is "a Senior Fellow in Bioethics and Human Rights at the Discovery Institute, is a consultant for the International Task Force on Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide and for the Center for Bioethics and Culture" according to his byline listed at the link .

This is jaw-dropping. I just saw this . It is with great sadness, therefore, that I have concluded that I cannot accept the Laetare Medal or participate in the May 17 graduation ceremony.

First Things - Demographics & Depression by David P. Goldman

This article appears in the May, 2009 edition of FIRST THINGS . It is a very thought-provoking article relating demographics and family size to the current economic morass and predicted loss of future wealth. I recommend it for your consideration.

First Things: On the Square >> We Shall Not Weary, We Shall Not Rest (Fr. Richard John Neuhaus)

The late Father Richard John Neuhaus was a devoted champion of LIFE. In his memory, FIRST THINGS will publish this speech each year on the date of the Roe v. Wade decision . We would do well to read it in its entirety. “We the People” have not and will not ratify the lethal logic of Roe v. Wade . That notorious decision of 1973 is the most consequential moral and political event of the last half century of our nation’s history. It has produced a dramatic realignment of moral and political forces, led by evangelicals and Catholics together, and joined by citizens beyond numbering who know that how we respond to this horror defines who we are as individuals and as a people. Our opponents, once so confident, are now on the defensive. Having lost the argument with the American people, they desperately cling to the dictates of the courts. No longer able to present themselves as the wave of the future, they watch in dismay as a younger generation recoils in horror from the bloodletting of

First Things: On the Square >> Theodicy and the Narrow Escape Syndrome

Fr. Richard John Neuhaus posts a wonderful essay on "theodicy" and the "God problem ." Any essay that brings in the agonies of Ivan Karamazov is well worth reading! "I try to spell out the implications of that in my book Death on a Friday Afternoon . But that book is not chiefly about theodicy. On that subject, there is another recent book that I would warmly recommend to James Wood and, if he could stifle his flippancy long enough to read it with care, to Bart Ehrman. It is David Bentley Hart’s The Doors of the Sea: Where Was God in the Tsunami? The Doors of the Sea was published in 2005 in the aftermath of the great Asian tsunami that killed an estimated 225,000 people. Throughout his reflection, Hart wrestles with the hauntingly brilliant statement of the theodicy question posed by Dostoyevsky’s Ivan Karamazov. Herewith a few of the things Hart says in this very impressive little book: “God has fashioned creatures in his image so that they might be join

First Things: On the Square >> The Philosophy of Medicine Reborn

This is an important article by Patrick C. Beeman on the future of the profession of medicine . To take a snippet from the opening of this article: Where is the profession of medicine going? Has it become simply applied biology, another “job” among equally good ways of earning a living? What kind of person should the physician be? What about bioethics? Is patient autonomy the only viable moral absolute? Oh, and—who is Dr. Edmund Pellegrino? In The Philosophy of Medicine Reborn: A Pellegrino Reader , Tristram Engelhardt, a bellwether of bioethics, and Fabrice Jotterand, who holds a dual appointment within the University of Texas system as assistant professor of philosophy and “psychiatry and clinical sciences,” have answered these questions by offering nineteen selections from Edmund Pellegrino’s six hundred articles and twenty-four books. At one time or another, Pellegrino was director of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics; president of the Catholic University of America; professor of
