Visitors ask...What is the Latin for "In God We Trust?"

This is not as simple as one might think. If you check the internet, you'll find many forms of this simple motto and some are rather bizarre. The one most often cited is "In Deo speramus" which means "In God We Trust," but could also be translated "In God We Hope." The motto is that of Brown University where it is, in fact, translated "hope." However, this webpage is a move to make this motto official and the phrasing used is "In Deo speramus ." That would seem realistic since a phrase in the Vulgate of St. Jerome uses "spero" to mean "to trust" (see below): The Vulgate translates Psalms 62:8 ("Trust in Him at all times) this way: sperate in eo omni tempore .
