The Catholic Thing: "A House Divided" by Ralph McInerny

Leave it to Professor Ralph McInerny of the University of Notre Dame to put what happened into words. They are found here . His essay is nothing short of amazing...and prophetic. If the Obama invitation has stirred such passionately prayerful reaction from an heroic band of students, from alumni and Catholics across the country, and – mirabile dictu – from more than seventy bishops, it may prove to have been providential, an opportunity for Catholics to recognize that their house is indeed divided. Please read it in its entirety .

I was as distressed as anyone by the rock-star reception by Obama, just as I would if Bush or any other politician were greeted in such a way at a Catholic institution. We've had enough problems with sucking up to civic authority over the last few dozen centuries, haven't we? It was creepy in a "Justice Sunday" kind of way. To me at least .)

Catholic Review Online: Archbishop is ‘disappointed,’ ‘bewildered’ by honor to Obama

The Archbishop of the "Premier See" of the United States has expressed his thoughts on the invitation of President Obama to the commencement at the University of Notre Dame . In a story written by George Matysek, Jr., His Excellency states his views: Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien said he is “disappointed and bewildered” by the decision of University of Notre Dame officials to honor President Barack Obama with an honorary doctorate at this year’s graduation ceremony. The university announced March 20 that the president would be the commencement speaker at its May 17 graduation. In a March 26 letter, Archbishop O’Brien told Notre Dame President Holy Cross Father John I. Jenkins he “fully supports” the March 24 statement of Bishop John M. D’Arcy of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, Ind., that raised concerns about the decision. Bishop D’Arcy pledged not to attend this year’s graduation and cited a 2004 statement by the U.S. Catholic bishops that Catholic institutions “shou

NDResponse.com - Website Launched

A website called NDResponse.com has been launched . The purpose of the site is stated as follows: In defense of the unborn, we wish to express our deepest opposition to Reverend John I. Jenkins, C.S.C.’s invitation of President Barack Obama to be the University of Notre Dame’s principal commencement speaker and the recipient of an honorary degree. Our objection is not a matter of political partisanship, but of President Obama’s hostility to the Catholic Church’s teachings on the sanctity of human life at its earliest stages. Further, the University’s decision runs counter to the policy of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops against honoring pro-choice politicians. We cannot sit by idly while the University honors someone who believes that an entire class of human beings is undeserving of the most basic of all legal rights, the right to live. Additionally, Fr. Jenkins has put some of his students into a position of moral dilemma as to whether they
