Catholic World News: The Pope's direct challenge; the French bishops' tepid response

Catholic World News has an incredibly insightful article on the message conveyed by His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, to the French Hierarchy . This is an excellent story and a MUST read. Reading between the lines, the full story emerges. Here is a snippet: Reading between the lines, it seems clear that the Pope was sending a message to French bishops, and others who have resisted implementation of the motu proprio . Even by their own standards, he was saying, they should "tolerate" the liturgical form that many faithful Catholics embrace. "There is no opposition between the liturgy renewed by Vatican II and this liturgy," the Pontiff assured his in-flight press conference. Thus there is no reason for hostility toward the extraordinary form. If that message was conveyed subtly during the Pope's trip toward Paris, it was delivered quite explicitly on Sunday when the Holy Father addressed the members of the French hierarchy in a meeting at Lourdes. Noting that

Summorum Pontificum: Advocatus Diaboli: Prelude by David L. Alexander

This is an excellent essay . It is a MUST read . The quote from Saint John Chrysostom's homily is most appropriate. I look forward to the rest in this series of articles. Well done!

WDTPRS >> RORATE: on Summorum Pontificum, SSPX, unity - enlightening

Some of you must get the impression that this blog is simply WDTPRS (Eastern U.S. Annex). That is not true. Fr. John Zuhlsdorf posts some fascinating articles and comments and not everyone finds his blog. There was a story posted this morning, an interview, with Professor Luc Perrin, that I linked to on RORATE CAELI . Fr. Zuhlsdorf reads it critically and makes some interesting observations . One, in particular, is worth mentioning from the interview (the quote is taken as found on the WDTPRS blog; BOLD portions are from Fr. Zuhlsdorf, and RED portion s are HIS comments : However we should consider two facts that need time to be fully received by the Church. First fact: the status of the traditional Roman rite (Extraordinary Form) has been firmly settled as never before . [But some will complain that it isn’t becaues Benedict XVI changed the Good Friday prayer. They are wrong, of course, and this guy right. But that doesn’t change the grousing.] On the very long term,

Summorum Pontificum: Is the Catholic Church sliding towards civil war?

Brian Kopp posts an interesting story with an extremely provocative title . The Roman Catholic Church is not a "standing army" composed of divisions. The Pope is not the Commander-in-chief, but the Servant of the Servants of God . It is an interesting story nonetheless in its scope, and puts into full view the concupiscence and folly of all of us men. As His Holiness infers in the final paragraph, God, is a patient God; the Son will still sort the "wheat from the chaff."

NLM: Cardinal Castrillón: Tradition Without Contestation

Gregor Kollmorgen of the New Liturgical Movement has a very insightful post . It arises from a liberal journal called " Jesus " and features an interview with Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos of the PCED. Here is part of the interview on the motu proprio , Summorum Pontificum : What are the questions that have arrived and would deserve an answer? "The first regards Latin, because - they say - to celebrate in a language which you do not know is not convenient. Unfortunately, the seminarians, but also some priests, have not studied it and therefore it is difficult for them to celebrate in the extraordinary form. To do so one should at least know the canon of the Mass , the part of the consecration. We in "Ecclesia Dei" are equipping ourselves and we are preparing meetings, courses and means of electronic communication for a deep knowledge of the earlier liturgy. Some courses are already being held in France, Germany, Brazil, Central America and the United Stat

A Fascinating Contrast Appearing on the Same Day!

Catholic World News today reports that H.E. Archbishop Piero Marini, former Master of Ceremonies to the Holy Father, tells "L'Osservatore Romano" that the liturgical changes following Vatican II are "irreversible ." The motu proprio , the archbishop said, was intended primarily to appeal to those Catholics who have a special connection with the pre-conciliar liturgy . He said that the document was “only a gesture to serve unity.” Meanwhile, Fr. John Zuhlsdorf of " What Does the Prayer Really Say ?" posts a nice story today on the TLM celebrated at Seton Hall University accompanied by a link to over 150 photos ! In attendance were over 50 students, a great many of them seminarians. In his homily Father Grimm stressed the importance of Catholic traditions , stating that the Extraordinary Form is the same Mass of countless saints including Padre Pio and Elizabeth Ann Seton. After Mass students whom never experienced the Extraordinary Form were great

WDTPRS: Mass of Ages: Ignacio Barreiro on implementing Summorum Pontificum

Father Zuhlsdorf has a long post on an article taken from the magazine," Mass of the Ages, " written by Msgr. Ignacio Barreiro . The long "point by point" discussion is well worth reading. In short, what is allowed and what is proscribed now that the TLM is again freely available? [...] The strongest of them, and the one I have to ponder a while, is the argument that whoever wishes the principal also desires what is accessory . It seems to me that we can’t just leap to the assumption that all those old decrees and so forth from the Sacred Congregation of Rites are all revived with Summorum Pontificum or that canons in the old Code are still in force, for example obliging women to wear chapel veils, etc. True, true...

WDTPRS: Card. Rigali on TLM training of seminarians at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia

Father Zuhlsdorf of WDTPRS carries this story from Zenit on His Eminence Justin Cardinal Rigali and the TLM at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia . Here is the opening sentence of the story : Since Benedict XVI has said that the Mass celebrated according to the 1962 Roman Missal promulgated by Blessed John XXIII should be available to those who prefer it, seminarians should be taught to say it, says Cardinal Justin Rigali. Father Z. has more as well as his customary commentary !

WDTPRS: Summorum Pontificum now in the Acta Apostolicae Sedis - text variations

Father John gives us a full explanation in WDTPRS in an at length post . He summarizes the story as follows: In a way, the change to stabiliter and non vult strengthen the rights of lay people in this regard. I don’t really understand the ramifications of the juridical sounding habitualiter (a dreadful Latin word). Yes, you have that right. On one portion, at least, the Canon lawyers may be involved ... Update: This portion of his interpretation is very meaningful and comes near the end: In article 7, non potest ("cannot") is not non vult ("does not want"). There is a big difference between not wanting to do something and not being able to do something. We are all able to do things we would prefer not to do. So, if a priest is capable, if a bishop is capable, but does not want to do something for the requests of lay people, the matter goes to Rome. In other words, if the cleric is capable, and the means are there, there is even less excuse not to rec

RORATE CAELI: IMPORTANT - Definitive text of the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum published

New Catholic of RORATE CAELI points out that Gianni Cardinale in " Avvenire " publishes the story today that the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum has been finally published in the official gazette of the Holy See, the Acta Apostolicae Sedis (dated September 7, 2007). Here are some pointed changes: A subtitle was given to the motu proprio: « De uso extraordinario antiquae formae Ritus Romani » ("On the extraordinary use of the ancient form of the Roman Rite"); In article 1, the word «conditiones» was replaced with the more correct form «condiciones» , with no change in meaning ("conditions"); In article 3, the word «plerumque» was replaced with «habitualiter» (our translation remains "habitually"); In article 5, § 1, «continenter» was replaced with «stabiliter» , avoiding the notion that the group of faithful would have to be continuous in a certain parish - it only has to exist in a stable, but not necessarily in a permanent and continuo

WDTPRS: A PCED clarification: stabiliter not continenter in the MP and TLM in universities

Father John in WDTPRS has issued a retraction in light of a letter he received from a friend by email. The letter is a response from the PCED to several questions from the correspondent. The issue pertains to Universities apparently and involves the use of the Latin word " stabiliter " and not " continenter " as Fr. John first thought. In his defense, there is great confusion on this since the Vatican website still lists " continenter " in the specific section of Summorum Pontificum in question ( 5, §1) . We will have to wait until the Holy Father clarifies this definitively.
