Visitors ask...Latin Mass...

A constant search string that places people on this blog is " Latin Mass " or derivatives thereof (" Latin Mass Parish ," for example). From that point on, problems seem to occur and the individual becomes lost. The Latin Mass can be the Latin " Novus Ordo " Mass (or Ordinary Form ) since the Missale Romanum (Roman Missal) that we use at Mass is in Latin but translated into the vernacular (i.e., English or Spanish). So, a Latin Mass could be one in the Ordinary Form recited in Latin. Such a one is to be found at the National Shrine of the Basilica of the Assumption each Sunday morning at 9:00 AM . The "other" Latin Mass has many names. The motu proprio , " Summorum Pontificum ," called it the Extraordinary Form . It has been known, however, as the Tridentine Mass , the Tridentine Latin Mass, the Pian Mass (for Pope Pius V) or the Usus Antiquior (if one wishes to denote its antiquity with modifications over the centuries). Catholic Review Online: Manchester parish to celebrate traditional Latin Mass on Pentecost

The Catholic Review Online carries a story dated today by George P. Matysek, Jr. on the return of the TLM to Saint Bartholomew's Parish in Manchester, MD . This blog has mentioned that Mass several times. Here is a short snippet from his article: Monsignor Robert Jaskot, chancellor of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, called the regional celebration of the extraordinary form of the Mass a “first step” for the Baltimore archdiocese. The rite is celebrated every week at the Shrine of St. Alphonsus in Baltimore. “It’s the intention of the archbishop to make this extraordinary form available,” he said. “We want to make sure we do things correctly and we do them well.” Monsignor Jaskot noted that it takes special training to make sure priests are prepared to celebrate the liturgy properly. Not only is the rite said in Latin, it also involves particular gestures and rubrics that must be learned. Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien is looking at how the extraordinary rite can be made more availab

NLM: The limits of mutual enrichment

Fr. Thomas Kocik posts a fascinating article on the "tensions" that exist between the Extraordinary and Ordinary Forms of the Mass . It seems we now have two principles in tension. On the one hand, there is (and has always been) the principle of obedience to liturgical norms. No priest, even if he be a bishop, may add, remove, or change anything in the liturgy on his own authority. [4] Do we really want every priest to be permitted, ad libitum , to incorporate elements of the 1962 Missal into his celebration of the ordinary form of Mass? (Then again, the ordinary form is hardly noted for its stability and consistency from place to place.) Read this post here .

Why is the Latin Mass Important?

I received a query asking a simple question, "Why is the Latin Mass important?" That is the subject for tomes really, but here is a link to a marvelous little piece on the Una Voce website called " Treasures of the Mass ." The introduction to this page reads: The following text is from a booklet published by the Benedictine Nuns of Perpetual Adoration in the United States. It was not copyrighted at the time of publication, and so we making the text available once again here on the Web. It is hoped that you will find this essay on the meaning and beauty of the Traditional Mass as valuable as we do. We've found it to be one of the most suscinct descriptions of the Ancient Roman Rite we've yet seen. It is indeed one of the most succinct descriptions of the TLM you will find .
