Visitors ask...Who is Fr. John Zuhlsdorf?

This query has appeared recently. Fr. John Zuhlsdorf has written a column for "The Wanderer" weekly newspaper for as long as I have subscribed called " What Does the Prayer Really Say ?" He would methodically translate the Latin Missale Romanum and indicate what the Latin prayers "really" said. With time, a new blog was initiated which everyone simply calls WDTPRS (shorthand for its title, " What Does the Prayer Really Say "). Fr. makes no bones about his identity. If you examine the right margin of his blog, he has posted a recent article on him linked to the "Catholic Herald" as well as a link to his own " Bona Fides ." I leave it to you to find these on his blogsite. Needless to say, he is a Roman Catholic priest, I am a big fan and I have been from his translation days that began in The Wanderer .

WDTPRS >> Tornielli on the SSPX reponse to Rome: more time

Fr. Zuhlsdorf weighs in on the story by Andrea Tornielli of Il Giornale . The commentary thread is adding more background to his comments.

WDTPRS: Countdown: accord between Holy See and SSPX and Neo-Catechumenals must adhere to the Roman Rite

Fr. Zuhlsdorf has an open discussion going on the two big stories of the day. First, the story broken by The New Liturgical Movement concerning the offer to the SSPX to "regularize ." And, the second story reported by Sandro Magister of Chiesa which recounts the changes to be made by he Neo-Cathechumenals .

WDTPRS: QUAERITUR: Can priests refuse to say the TLM or the Novus Ordo?

Fr. Zuhlsdorf responds at length to the question above . His answer is quite informative. It is well worth reading.

WDTPRS: TLM Workshop ... for lay people

Fr. Zuhlsdorf has a wonderful post on a workshop on the TLM for lay people . Here is just one paragraph of his opening comments before showing the email from the St. John Cantius Parish: True active participation, as the Church understands it, is more along the lines of active receptivity, uniting our heart, mind and will to the words and gestures in the sacred Action of the Mass. Christ is the true Actor in the liturgy. Sometimes He uses our voices and gestures. At other times we participate in his words and gestures through the priest and sacred ministers, always being open to what Christ is offering. In this way we are actively receptive. There is nothing passive about listening and watching intently, in union what what is being said, sung and enacted. Marvelous must read !

WDTPRS: Washington, DC and Baltimore: Upcoming Solemn TLMs

Father John Zuhlsdorf has posted an email with the two "major events" for this coming weekend . First, there is the F.S.S.P. Mass to be held in the Crypt at the Basilica of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in D.C. on Saturday, June 7th . And second, there is a Solemn High Mass at Saint Alphonsus Church in Baltimore on Sunday, June 8th with Fr. Romanoski celebrating . Please see his post. Both locations can be found in the menu on the right under Blogroll and Favorite Websites.

Visitors ask...FSSP Ordinations in Lincoln, Nebraska on May 30th

For some reason, many visitors are unable to find this marvelous link to What Does the Prayer Really Say which has a gorgeous photo-montage of the entire Ordination in Lincoln, NE taken from EWTN . Fr. Zuhlsdorf also provides commentary.

WDTPRS: The Pope to put limits on concelebrations

Fr. Zuhlsdorf of " What Does the Prayer Really Say " comments on the news as reported in " Panorama " : No more big "show" Masses: The Popes want to put the brakes on huge concelebrations with hundreds of priests, often far from the altar, as we are now used to in the World Youth Days and papal journeys. Benedict XVI has entrusted to the Congregation for Divine Worship the task of preparing, if necessary, an "instruction". Full story is here !

Afternoon Roundup - Monday, May 19th, 2008

WDTPRS >> UPDATE: TLM dust up with the LMS and Cathedral Chapter of Cardiff (This story was reported yesterday, but Fr. Zuhlsdorf has added additional information on this on May 19th. Please read the much more detailed story with his commentary.) The New Liturgical Movement >> Wyoming Catholic College and the Sacred Liturgy (by Shawn Tribe). Personal note: I have noted visitors from this college to this blog but was not very familiar with the Institution. Judging by this story on the Liturgy, it is a real gem! Laus Deo!

WDTPRS: Fr. Z rants & Augustine on Pentecost and the Cardinal on YouTube

Father Zuhlsdorf explains why this "ought to be" the Monday in the Octave of Pentecost on one of his PODCAzTs while citing Saint Augustine. He also has a link to a YouTube of Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos speaking in the Introduction of the F.S.S.P.'s TLM training DVD on the TLM and His Eminence's views on its availability. Fascinating!

WDTPRS: Italian magazine Jesus interviews Card. Castrillon Hoyos of the P.C. “Ecclesia Dei”

The interview covered by the publication, " Jesus ," was translated and posted yesterday by Gregor Kollmorgen of The New Liturgical Movement and linked here yesterday. Today, the story has been covered all over the blogosphere. This follow-up post by Father John Zuhlsdorf of What Does the Prayer Really Say is critical to your understanding of the implications of this story as it is a detailed commentary on what was asked and said . In part, it is important because Fr. Zuhlsdorf was affiliated with the PCED for which Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos is speaking. In short, this is ESSENTIAL READING . The Cardinal states at one point about a sentiment being the "mens" of the Pope (L., mens , mind). We can trust, then, that H.E. knows the "mind" of the Holy Father.

WDTPRS: Comments on the Curial Appointments and the Swiss Guard Ceremony

Some curial appointments (many comments; can the "extremely busy" Archbishop Burke remain in the U.S. with so many Curial duties?) Swiss Guard sworn in today (with links to previous articles on this ceremony)
