WDTPRS >> Praying for the dead

Fr. John Zuhlsdorf catechizes all of us when he reminds us that funerals involve praying for the dead . Please read his post today. It clears up many misconceptions that have crept into our consciousness. Also, Fisheaters has a list of prayers that are appropriate . The days when priests would say as many Masses as possible on All Souls Day are long gone. I recall when all three altars--yes, we had three--were being used to say Mass for the souls in Purgatory.

RORATE CAELI: Moves towards the "Anglican Continuum"

New Catholic also now cites Atonement Online and provides some further thoughts . I find it interesting that this story has broken so wide open today, the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and that the brown scapular features in this Marian feast with regard to St. Simon Stock as Archbishop Myers made clear. From its earliest days, devotion to the Mother of God always has been an important part of English Catholic life. The tradition of the Holy Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, given to the universal Church through St. Simon Stock, derives from English soil. The famed medieval shrine to Our Lady of Walsingham and its tradition of pilgrimages is deeply rooted in English history and lives again today. The fervent devotion of England to Mary is exemplified poetically and beautifully in the concept of England as “Our Lady’s Dowry,” a devotion that tradition dates to King St. Edward the Confessor.

Standing on My Head: Another Hint

Fr. Dwight Longenecker has been on top of this story from the start . In this post, he links to a fascinating story by Damian Thompson in the Telegraph.co.uk . The opening sentence of Mr. Thompson's story is the stunner: The Catholic Church will expand its provision of "Anglican Use" parishes in the United States in order to allow whole communities of traditionalist Anglicans into the Roman fold , a senior Catholic archbishop has announced. Please read both the blog post as well as Mr. Thompson's story in the Telegraph . If true, this has huge implications.

Visitors ask...Choosing a Catholic College

It must be that time of year when high school juniors and their parents are contemplating life after their senior year. I have had a number of visitors searching for Catholic colleges and "Newman" has appeared in the "search string." I think I can assist... The Cardinal Newman Society is an organization that works to strengthen and renew Catholic education. One of the features of this society is "The Newman Guide" -- a list of recommendations that is by particular criteria that the society sets. Here is the list they published for 2007 ; each year, the list may change according to their criteria. I hope this helps those who are seeking!
