Archdiocese of Baltimore Website: Press Release on Snow Storm

The Archdiocese of Baltimore has issued this press release . I just heard a summary of this on a local news channel. Catholics Excused from Attending Mass if Travel is Unsafe 12/19/2009 Archbishop Edwin O'Brien, Archbishop of Baltimore, is reminding Catholics in the Archdiocese that Church law excuses them from fulfilling the Sunday obligation to attend Mass due to a "grave cause," such as unsafe travel due to severe weather conditions. Those who cannot safely attend Mass are encouraged to listen to the Sunday Radio Mass on WBAL-AM (1090) at 9:30 am or watch the TV Mass on EWTN. Check ewtn.com for more information. EWTN's TV schedule for the Fourth Sunday of Advent shows televised Masses at 8 AM (Live) and again rebroadcast at Noon.

NLM: The Roman Rite Christmas Proclamation

Jeffrey Tucker of the New Liturgical Movement has done an invaluable service by posting the "Christmas Proclamation" or "Kalenda" on the NLM blog. The link is here . Notice that he has both the USCCB version and that which will be sung "in LATIN" at the Vatican. I have posted links in the past since this is a perennial search. However, for the definitive version, go here ! Notice that the comments are also excellent! Thanks, Jeffrey!

Visitors ask..."What is a Greater Feria?"

A visitor asked "what is a Greater Feria ?" I strictly use the Ordo of the F.S.S.P. found linked in the "header above" and linked also here . The Ferias of the next several days are listed as the " Greater Ferias ." The reason for this designation is that these Ferias use the marvelous " O Antiphons " of antiquity. Check, for example info here , and also here . By the way, I found an online Ordo here for the many who are searching for one which one can download to a calendar or into Microsoft. It seems to be a nice tool. [No warranty is expressed or implied, however!]. I personally like the "book" format of my spiral bound F.S.S.P. Ordo just purchased...

Idea #835778...

I have no idea if this is a novel idea. It just popped into my head while listening to news of merchants and malls that did not want to promote the Feast of Christmas--the "Reason for the Season" as they say. The idea of many is to keep Christmas strictly "multicultural" and totally non-religious. Suppose "Christmas-friendly" merchants sported small signs such as this in their store windows? Just thinking out loud... I'm just saying...

Visitors ask...How do you pronounce "Cantemus?"

A persistent soul has been asking "how to pronounce cantemus ?" The Latin "Cantemus Domino" is found often. The marvelous blog by Aristotle A. Esguerra uses this term as his URL and it means " We Sing to the Lord ." Here is another example by Rossini found in the ChoralWiki. The verb cantare is declined as shown here with "cantemus" being the first person plural form or "we sing". I'd pronounce this Can té mus which would be rendered "kahn-tay'-muss." The accent is on the second syllable and the "a" is a soft "a". It is not the "can" as in "tin can" but more like "kahn" and the "mus" is not the muss as in "muss one's hair" but a soft "u" sound as in the word "put."
