Special: FSSP and EWTN Produce Training DVD; Free for priests in North America

Shawn Tribe of The New Liturgical Movement has a fascinating post . The F.S.S.P. in association with EWTN is offering a free DVD for all priests in North America . The DVD is a training video for the Usus Antiquior with an introduction by Cardinal Castrillon-Hoyos . As Shawn states: The first DVD contains the introduction by Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos, followed by a "comprehensive explanation of the entire ceremony of Low Mass..." The second DVD included in the set includes "a real time demonstration of the Mass filmed from four simultaneous camera angles with the ability to switch the viewing angle at any time. Also includes a spiritual commentary on the Mass by Fr. Calvin Goodwin, FSSP." Check here for more .

A Fascinating Contrast Appearing on the Same Day!

Catholic World News today reports that H.E. Archbishop Piero Marini, former Master of Ceremonies to the Holy Father, tells "L'Osservatore Romano" that the liturgical changes following Vatican II are "irreversible ." The motu proprio , the archbishop said, was intended primarily to appeal to those Catholics who have a special connection with the pre-conciliar liturgy . He said that the document was “only a gesture to serve unity.” Meanwhile, Fr. John Zuhlsdorf of " What Does the Prayer Really Say ?" posts a nice story today on the TLM celebrated at Seton Hall University accompanied by a link to over 150 photos ! In attendance were over 50 students, a great many of them seminarians. In his homily Father Grimm stressed the importance of Catholic traditions , stating that the Extraordinary Form is the same Mass of countless saints including Padre Pio and Elizabeth Ann Seton. Visitors ask...Latin Mass...

A constant search string that places people on this blog is " Latin Mass " or derivatives thereof (" Latin Mass Parish ," for example). From that point on, problems seem to occur and the individual becomes lost. The Latin Mass can be the Latin " Novus Ordo " Mass (or Ordinary Form ) since the Missale Romanum (Roman Missal) that we use at Mass is in Latin but translated into the vernacular (i.e., English or Spanish). So, a Latin Mass could be one in the Ordinary Form recited in Latin. Such a one is to be found at the National Shrine of the Basilica of the Assumption each Sunday morning at 9:00 AM . The "other" Latin Mass has many names. The motu proprio , " Summorum Pontificum ," called it the Extraordinary Form . It has been known, however, as the Tridentine Mass , the Tridentine Latin Mass, the Pian Mass (for Pope Pius V) or the Usus Antiquior (if one wishes to denote its antiquity with modifications over the centuries). Pilgrimage of Restoration to the National Basilica of the Immaculate Conception

I am deeply indebted to my email friend, "J." for sending this along. This year the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter will be making their annual pilgrimage of reparation to the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC, to thank Our Lady, patroness of America for all the graces she has showered upon us, particularly in the recent visit of his Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, and to make reparation for all the sins of our nation. Concluding their 3-day pilgrimage along the C&O canal, the kind permission of the Rector, Msrg. Rossi, having been granted, they will celebrate a Solemn High Mass on the main altar of the Crypt chapel in the Basilca at 6 pm, Saturday, June 7th. The celebrant will be the newly ordained Rev. Jonathan Romanoski FSSP. All are welcome to attend, as the Crypt chapel will accomodate many. The F.S.S.P. post is here . Father Romanoski will celebrate a Solemn High Mass at St. Alphonsus Church as posted here.

Catholic Review Online: Manchester parish to celebrate traditional Latin Mass on Pentecost

The Catholic Review Online carries a story dated today by George P. Matysek, Jr. on the return of the TLM to Saint Bartholomew's Parish in Manchester, MD . This blog has mentioned that Mass several times. Here is a short snippet from his article: Monsignor Robert Jaskot, chancellor of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, called the regional celebration of the extraordinary form of the Mass a “first step” for the Baltimore archdiocese. The rite is celebrated every week at the Shrine of St. Alphonsus in Baltimore. “It’s the intention of the archbishop to make this extraordinary form available,” he said. “We want to make sure we do things correctly and we do them well.” Monsignor Jaskot noted that it takes special training to make sure priests are prepared to celebrate the liturgy properly. Not only is the rite said in Latin, it also involves particular gestures and rubrics that must be learned. Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien is looking at how the extraordinary rite can be made more availab

Visitors ask...Latin Prayers for the Dead - Updated

A visitor from afar searched for Latin prayers for the dead. In the Raccolta I have (dated 30 May, 1951), there are sundry short prayers including the "Dies Irae." The Fisheaters site has an extensive page on Catholic funerals and the full liturgy. This page has a portion dedicated to the burial and its prayers which are abbreviated. The familiar prayer at the gravesite is given here: Réquiem æternam dona ei, Dómine. Eternal rest grant unto him (her), O Lord. Et lux perpétua lúceat ei. And let perpetual light shine upon him (her). Requiéscat in pace. May he (she) rest in peace. Amen. Amen. Anima ejus, et ánimæ ómnium fidélium defunctórum, per misericórdiam Dei requiéscant in pace. May his (her) soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

Decent Films Guide by Steven D. Greydanus

In my lifetime, there once was a Catholic Film Index and it was one of the "go to" sites in the weekly Catholic newspaper for parents. Films were rated and the ratings were prominently posted for all parents to see. And, the Index rating conveyed the "moral Authority" of the Church. Now, we rely mostly on the film industry to tell what the film rating is with regard to "nudity, violence, adult situations" and so on. Decent Films Guide is a nice website of Steven D. Greydanus . The films are both reviewed AND rated and this allows parents to make the total judgment call on whether a film is decent or not. It is a "bookmark site" for certain. Here is link to the review of the recent film, "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" (2007) . Note the right margin of the website. The film is rated for Overall Recommendability, Artistic Entertainment Value, Moral/Spiritual Value (going from a +4 to -4 rating), Age Appropriateness, the MPAA rat

Here is a snippet of the interview: Ignatius Insight: There has been a tremendous amount of debate in recent years about Shakespeare's identity and the nature of his religious beliefs. Can you provide a basic overview to those debates? Pearce: I give an overview of the various aspects of this debate in the opening chapter of my book. I show that the claims of those who say that someone other than Shakespeare wrote the plays are fundamentally flawed and are rooted in an ignorance of the real William Shakespeare. I then show that the claims of those who believe that Shakespeare was a Protestant or t

NLM: The limits of mutual enrichment

Fr. Thomas Kocik posts a fascinating article on the "tensions" that exist between the Extraordinary and Ordinary Forms of the Mass . It seems we now have two principles in tension. On the one hand, there is (and has always been) the principle of obedience to liturgical norms. No priest, even if he be a bishop, may add, remove, or change anything in the liturgy on his own authority. [4] Do we really want every priest to be permitted, ad libitum , to incorporate elements of the 1962 Missal into his celebration of the ordinary form of Mass? (Then again, the ordinary form is hardly noted for its stability and consistency from place to place.) Read this post here .

Catholic Review Online: Pope’s message one of hope for U.S., Baltimore

His Excellency recalls his experiences with the Holy Father during the Papal visit. Here is a short snippet: And in the relatively few major addresses, the Holy Father proclaimed that message unmistakably to Catholics and non-Catholics alike, ever sensitive to the beliefs of others in his audiences. So densely packed with theological and spiritual insights, his addresses will have to be re-read and studied in the weeks ahead in order to mine their rich content. Equally important and meaningful as were his words, was his very presence and the intangible magnetism which drew millions to see and listen in person or through the media which offered generous coverage. Not only did we flock to see him, but he reached out with the Good Shepherd’s concern to those who might otherwise be overlooked: the victims of clergy sexual abuse,

Visitors ask...Papal Mass DVDs and TLM Vestments

How do I get a DVD or CD of the Papal Masses from the Holy Father's visit? EWTN is already offering the DVD for the Papal Mass in Washington, D.C. , but it is out of stock. I would keep an eye on this EWTN location . It is sure to have ALL the Papal Masses eventually. Also, if I get word from the Archdioceses of Washington and New York, I will post a link. I am looking for classical Tridentine Mass vestments and/or items for the Tridentine Mass ( Extraordinary Form ; Usus Antiquior , TLM). Where can I find these? I am not an expert on this and I am sure that other sites have far better lists of suppliers. However, if you look at the very end of the FAQs for this blog , there is a category listing several places which sell Mass vestments and liturgical supplies. Note that one is an Order of Religious Sisters in Scranton, PA who specialize in making vestments for the F.S.S.P.
