Visitors ask...The Grail Psalter

I receive a fair number of searches for "The Grail Psalter" including such strings as "online access," "origin," "availability," etc. THE home for questions on the Grail Psalter is the New Liturgical Movement. Here is a search of articles on the Psalter that I made for you . It should help you to understand the complexities of what is going on.

NLM: A Serious Issue on the Revised Grail Psalter | Jeffrey Tucker

I have awaited the reaction of Jeffrey Tucker of the NLM on the adoption of the Revised Grail Psalter. He has posted a long article here voicing some serious misgivings . Please read this post. I suppose his entire set of concerns can be summarized in this paragraph: This of it: A private company using a legal monopoly to sell the Psalms we are mandated to sing at a profit and using the state to crack down on all who attempt to compete or give them away for free? The GIA and the USCCB are playing with fire here. The Reformation was prompted by injustices less egregious. All Catholics must stand up and insist that this must not be allowed to happen. If the Church is going to authorize the Revised Grail, access must be efficient and impartial in the only way it can be: the rights to the texts must be completely open access. Please read the entire article here .

Visitors ask...Conception Abbey Revised Grail Psalter (CARG)

Since the announcement that the USCCB has chosen the Revised Grail Psalter of Conception Abbey, I have been swamped with searches for more information. Here is what I know: The Revised Psalter comes from here The Rector makes reference to the work as the first item in this news report Abbot Gregory Polan seems to be the motive force (see above) Adoremus in its November edition makes comments on this Psalter here The rights to the Psalter belong to Conception Abbey. The USCCB had been in contact and negotiations with Conception Abbey and apparently had worked out arrangements regarding copywritten material. In short, it is unlikely that "open versions" of this are available at present. Bishop Serratelli did say that the Psalms captured the original Hebrew exquisitely and that the sung versions were beautiful. I will update this if I hear more, but the New Liturgical Movement is likely to break this news.

USCCB - Bishops Approve Icel Gray Book Translation of the Proper of Seasons and Revised Grail Psalter

Following up on a post from yesterday, I found the official announcement , made today, by the USCCB Office of Media Relations : Bishops Approve Icel Gray Book Translation of the Proper of Seasons and Revised Grail Psalter BALTIMORE—The U.S. bishops approved the ICEL Gray Book Translation of the Proper of Seasons November 11, at their General Assembly in Baltimore, in a 189-30 vote. The bishops also approved the Revised Grail Psalter by the Monks of Conception Abbey for liturgical use in the United States in a 203-5 vote. The Committee on Divine Worship placed the Gray Book edition of the Proper of Seasons , the Mass prayers for special parts of the liturgical year like Advent and Lent, before the bishops at their June 2008 meeting in Orlando, but the vote taken was inconclusive. After a subsequent mail ballot was sent to the Latin rite members of the conference who had not voted, the translation did not receive the necessary two-thirds approval. The bishops proposed modifications,

UPDATE : At the Bishop's Meeting, two significant votes passed. The vote to approve the "Gray Book" (as amended) passed by 187 - 30. The vote to ask Rome for recognitio of the revised "Grail" (CARG) Psalter to be used in place of the NAB 1970 Psalter also passed . The Grail Psalter is updated and familiar to those who read the Liturgy of the Hours; it is used in many other English-speaking countries.
