Jeffrey Tucker of the New Liturgical Movement has done an invaluable service by posting the "Christmas Proclamation" or "Kalenda" on the NLM blog. The link is here . Notice that he has both the USCCB version and that which will be sung "in LATIN" at the Vatican. I have posted links in the past since this is a perennial search. NLM: What is going on at Mount St. Mary's?

Jeffrey Tucker of The New Liturgical Movement asks a rhetorical question and then answers it . The article concerns a new CD recorded by the seminarians at the Mount . In short, Mr. Tucker is floored: Someone might further observe that this music never really sounded that good in the 1910-1950s, and then argue that it was dropped for good reason, that it was moldy and had to go. On the other hand, what replaced it was far worse, and I tend to reject claims that the old sentimentalism is aesthetically equal to Glory & Praise. Whatever was wrong with the Montani/Ravanello oeuvre, it was pious and sought integration with the Roman Rite. In any case, it hardly matters, because the singers do an amazing job with the music, and make a very strong case for it actually. I'm blown away by how well these guys sing, and the recording quality is outstanding. Someone had the good sense to put lots of effort into this project. It is very exciting, and I can only hope it becomes a big sel

The New Liturgical Movement - Grail Psalms: A Path Forward

I have had numerous searches for the Grail Psalms. Jeffrey Tucker does a fine job setting down his reservations in a cogent article . I think this article is one that is worth looking at and discussing. I hope it gets wide coverage in the U.S.

GIA, Revised Grail Psalter, and Open Access: The New Liturgical Movement by Jeffrey Tucker

I have received a great number of inquiries of interest regarding my posts on the Revised Grail Psalter. As you know if you looked at follow-up stories, I posted the concerns of Jeffrey Tucker of the New Liturgical Movement who is a major force in Musica Sacra . Today, Mr. Tucker received a response from GIA which will act as the agent for the copyright and the correspondence is posted here . This is of great concern for all of us (or it should be). Open access is mandatory for Liturgical texts that will be used in writing Sacred Music and cannot be the singular property of one agent. Artistic freedom is required so that we obtain the very best music possible to honor God. Please see this message so you understand what is happening here.

NLM: ICEL, copyright, and the core of the problem

Jeffrey Tucker of The New Liturgical Movement puts the issue of new musical settings into perspective with regard to the copyright and taxation standards in place with ICEL. It is an essay well worth reading. The letter from CDWDS specifies that new musical settings are now needed.

NLM: Plainsong Must Return to Our Parishes

Jeffrey Tucker presents a very lucid argument for returning plainsong now as the new Liturgical translations are being implemented . Read his essay and see if you agree. The Church in her wisdom accommodates this with the musical structure of the Roman Rite. It gives the parts that change the least to the priest. The parts that change a bit more but still not much are assigned to the people generally (the ordinary). The parts that are very difficult and change every week are assigned to the choir, precisely because people with a musical vocation love change and variety and can handle that from a technical point of view. So consider using the new Mass texts as a way to completely rethink the way music is used in the parts that generally belong to the people. By using plainsong, we make the transition easier, and also take a huge step to using the music that is most suitable to the Roman Rite. The full article is here .

NLM: Headlines filled with chant news

Jeffrey Tucker posts a link to an article by Daniel Burke which appeared in the Kansas City Star but is syndicated widely . Here is just a bit: After a public relations push by Pope Benedict XVI, who wants Gregorian chant restored to its “pride of place” in the liturgy, a plainsong renaissance is percolating among U.S. Catholics as well. Nearly 200 scholas — choirs that sing plainsong — have popped up around the country, many in the last five years, according to the Church Music Association of America, or CMA. Sacred music seminars that once drew 40 to 50 people now lure hundreds of Catholic musical directors, organists and singers. And priests-in-training in seminaries across the country are increasingly asking to be educated in the intricacies of Gregorian chant, said William Mahrt, CMA president and sacred-song expert. NLM: In Praise of Gloria XV (Gregorian Chant for Your Parish)

Jeffrey Tucker of The New Liturgical Movement has a nice story on "Gloria XV ." It is a simple Gloria that any Parish can do. Please check out his story! The comments also add a great deal. So there are a number of factors here in the success of Gloria XV. It is great music. It is part of the Mass. It is unusual and challenging. But also, the celebrant has led the way in showing people how to do this. Now, I know that not everyone is so fortunate as to have a celebrant who is willing to intone the Gloria. But perhaps we should all make greater efforts here. We are, after all, talking about four words and three notes. This is not difficult. But it makes an immense difference for everyone. NLM: How to Plan Music for Mass: Step One

Jeffrey Tucker of The New Liturgical Movement has a thoughtful and probing article on the music chosen for Mass . It is well worth reading ! Here is a snippet: People simply did not know or care that the Roman Rite comes with its own music that is part of the structure of the liturgy. The New Mass was rushed out as a text alone, rather than an entire liturgical package that included music as part of the structure, as much as the readings themselves. Vatican II said that that the chants of the Mass are to assume the primary role, but, in practice, this instruction became a dead letter. And, yes, I am aware that the problem predates 1970, but the complete loss of consciousness took place within the last decades. Many are working right now to repair the damage and recapture what has been lost, using the Graduale Romanum as the guide. But bad habits are hard to break. Musicians just aren't accustomed to considering which Mass they are instructed to do. For example, let's say t

Divine Office Online and Terrible TV Coverage of Papal Liturgies

Things keep rolling in this Friday!

Thomas Peters of AmericanPapist reports that Archbishop Burke has pronounced "two more" excommunications meaning "five" in two days. Go to his site for details! Jeffrey Tucker of the New Liturgical Movement has a thoughtful post on the attitude and the sociological details of those of us who watched the virtual disappearance of the "Latin Mass" in the 60's . He entitles his post, "Were the Catholic People Happy About the Abandonment of the Old Mass?" Yes, I was there and lived through it if you wondered about that...
