Visitors ask...Opus Dei - FSSP - Latin Mass? I'm confused!

I get many searches that show evidence of a misunderstanding between "Opus Dei," "F.S.S.P." and "Latin Mass." So, searches for "Opus Dei Latin Mass" are not uncommon. Here is the link to Opus Dei in the U.S. with all the information you could wish. It is a "personal Prelature" and has nothing to do with the Latin or Traditional Mass. Its founder is a canonized saint, Saint Josemaria Escriva . Is it possible that an Opus Dei priest could say the TLM? Yes! See below! The F.S.S.P. is actually shorthand for the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter or, in Latin, Fraternitas Sacerdotalis Sancti Petri (thus the contraction, FSSP !). This Fraternity says Mass according to the Missal of 1962 (the Traditional Mass, Extraordinary Form or Usus Antiquior to use several acronyms). This group DOES celebrate the "Latin Mass." It is only one of several groups that use this Missal including the Institute of Christ the King Sov

Opus Dei - Growing in Faith: Year of Saint Paul

The Opus Dei Newsletter arrived today and linked to a marvelous article on the Year of Saint Paul . As always, it is well written and well researched. I urge anyone interested in this personal prelature to sign up for their e-newsletter which is free. The Opus Dei site links to the latest News , and has a nice feature called the Press Room which has many features of interest to journalists . The home page for the United States is located here . This is still one of the most popular "search strings" on this blog.

Afternoon Roundup - Tuesday, October 28th, 2008 - Sts. Simon and Jude

The New Liturgical Movement has an extremely important post relating to Summorum Pontificum, and to the continuity of the Usus Antiquior with the Latin Liturgy. The post is translated from Italian and is entitled, " Response of the Cardinal President of the Pontifical Commission “Ecclesia Dei” to certain questions ." Shawn Tribe posted this and it is a MUST READ! Note the important passage stating again that NO INDULT is necessary! A. Evidently not. This is because, with the publication of the Motu Proprio “Summorum Pontificum,” the regulations for the use of the Missal of 1962, previously given in “Quattuor abhinc annos” and thereafter in the Motu Proprio of the Servant of God, John Paul II “Ecclesia Dei adflicta” have become obsolete. In fact, “Summorum Pontificum” itself, even from Art.1, explicitly affirms that “the conditions of the use of this Missal, regulated in the previous documents “Quattuor abhinc annos” and “Ecclesia Dei”, have been replaced. The Motu Proprio

Visitors ask...How do you pronounce "Opus Dei?"

When visitors ask once, it is by chance. When they ask twice, it is by coincidence. When they ask three times, it is by design. Opus Dei. The word "opus" is from the Latin: opus -eris n. [ work , labor; work done, a finished work ; a building; a literary work or a work of art]. The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary gives its pronunciation here . Pronunciation: \ ˈ ō-pəs\ Deus is the Latin word for God and Dei is the genitive case (of God). It would be pronounced: \ ˈ Dā- E ˈ ō -pes Dā - ˈ E, the Work of God...

Opus Dei News: 36 New Priests for the Prelature of Opus Dei

I mentioned that I had signed up to receive the Opus Dei News and this is one of the reports that arrived today . On May 24th, Bishop Javier Echevarría ordained thirty six of the Prelature’s faithful to the priesthood. Two of the new priests offer reflections on what this step means for them. With links to 20 photos from the ceremony and the Prelate's homily. There is a great deal more information at the link . Here is a list of the men who were ordained to the Priesthood: The names of the thirty six new priests and their countries of origin are: Avelino Picón (Spain) Marc Chatanay (France) Juan Manuel de Ojeda (Spain) Iñaki Landa (Spain) Gabriel de Castro (Spain) Pedro Regojo (Portugal) Dominique Khoury-Hélou (Lebanon) José Antonio Brage (Spain) Manuel García de Madariaga (Spain) Marcos Antini (Brazil) Sergio Gascón (Spain) Fernando José Gallego (Spain) Óscar Beorlegui (Spain) Antonio Cózar (Spain) Iñigo Martínez-Echevarría (Spain) Carlo de Marchi (Italy) Javi

Visitors ask...Opus Dei (in Baltimore or Maryland or Washington)

A perennial favorite in search strings is getting to be "Opus Dei " ('in Baltimore,' or 'in Maryland' or 'in Washington, D.C.). I am a bit surprised that visitors land here, but suspect that it might be because I posted a link to the vaunted reading list of Fr. C. John McCloskey which is one of my "all time" favorite links (and lists) ! Opus Dei's website is not 'hidden or secret' but is located here . This link connects to international locations. The Opus Dei link for the United States is here . Since Opus Dei ("the work of God") is a personal prelature , it is...umm... personal ! This link gives some personal testimonies of members and what Opus Dei has meant to them . Opus Dei runs a number of schools within the United States. The closest is Oakcrest School whose website is found here. As you can see, the school is located in McLean, VA. If you wish to receive the free email Opus Dei newsletter,

Visitors ask...Father John McCloskey

I am pleasantly surprised that one of the more sought after posts on this blog is the " Lifetime Reading Plan " by Fr. John McCloskey. Here is another link to his "featured articles ." And this link takes you to his book reviews . For those who have searched, there is no "Opus Dei" Parish in Baltimore to my knowledge. I know that Opus Dei operates several high schools within the U.S. but I don't believe there is one in Baltimore. Here is a link to Opus Dei in the U.S.

Zenit: Opus Dei Opens Its Doors to Everyone

Miriam Díez i Bosch of Zenit.org has an interesting interview with the Vicar General of the personal prelature, Opus Dei , Rev. Monsignor Fernando Ocáriz . Here is a small portion of that interview: Q: Opus Dei was born to help laypeople in their ordinary life. Are laypeople truly a part of the prelature of Opus Dei, or is the prelature only for the relatively few priests of Opus Dei? Monsignor Ocáriz: Opus Dei was born precisely to remind everyone, both priests and laypersons, of the universal call to holiness. As [the founder] St. Josemaría taught since 1928, the fact that this call is universal and that God calls each person, means that all upright human realities -- professional work, family and social relations -- can and should be a sanctified and sanctifying reality. As Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger said when the founder of Opus Dei was canonized, the message of St. Josemaría Escrivá has helped to correct an erroneous idea of sanctity, as thought it were reserved only for the &quo

Father C. John McCloskey, III, STD: A Lifetime Reading List

Here is some news for a beautiful Sunday... Father C. John McCloskey of the Prelature of Opus Dei has a remarkable background that began on Wall Street . His biography is quite astounding as indicated here . Stories on those souls who have converted to the Faith under his spiritual guidance are also numerous . Fr. John has what he calls a Catholic Lifetime Reading Plan that I printed out years ago. While some may quibble that "this should be added" or "that should be deleted," the plan is an excellent one. It contains some of the great works of Roman Catholic literature from famous novelists, saints, Popes and apologists. Here is a just a brief look : St. Catherine – Little Talks with God (modernized version of "The Dialogues") – Spiritual Classics Cervantes – Don Quixote – Literary Classics Chautard – Soul of Apostolate – Spiritual Reading Chesterton – Everlasting Man – Spiritual Classics Chesterton – Orthodoxy – Spiritual Classics Chesterton –
