Visitors ask...More Latin Prayers for the Dead

When I began this blog some time ago, I decided to check the "questions" that visitors used in their search queues for suggestions. A constant item that appeared was "Latin prayers for the dead." I tried to answer that on two occasions. The first is linked here, and the second is linked here. It is still a perennial, however.

In a way, I am glad to see that there are those who still seek such Latin prayers as it suggests that many still think about the "four last things" (or Catholic eschatology) and are praying for those who now rest in Purgatory; these souls are in continual need of our prayers and on a daily basis.

I have a copy of "The Raccolta" I purchased years ago. Here are some prayers that are listed from the 1957 version that was reprinted.

O Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, deliver the souls of all the faithful departed from the pains of hell and from the bottomless pit; deliver them out of the lion’s mouth, lest hell should swallow them up, lest they fall into the outer darkness; but let Thy standard-bearer, Saint Michael, bring them back into Thy holy light, which Thou didst promise of old to Abraham and to his seed. (from the Roman Missal)

O God who hast commanded us to honor our father and our mother; in Thy mercy have pity on the souls of my father and mother and forgive them their trespasses; and make me to see them again in the joy of the everlasting brightness. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. (from the Roman Missal)

Amen. (ex Missali Romano)

Incline, Thine ear, O Lord, unto our prayers, wherein we humbly pray Thee to show Thy mercy upon the soul of Thy servant N., whom Thou hast commanded to pass out of this world, that Thou wouldst place him in the region of peace and light, and bid him be a partaker with Thy saints. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. (from the Roman Missal)
