Catholic Review Online: Intimidated? | Archbishop Edwin F. O'Brien

In his weekly column, " Thoughts on Our Church ," Archbishop Edwin F. O'Brien recounts a brief lesson in Maryland history : The seeds were probably sown centuries ago in a hostile atmosphere for Catholics in the New World. In 1633, as the earliest colonists were about to set sail for “Mary Land”, Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore, instructed “his said Governor and Commissioners” that while sailing and upon arrival at their destination “they instruct all the Roman Catholics to be silent on all occasions of discourse concerning matters of religion...” His Excellency then goes on in his thoughtful essay to demonstrate the modern results of this mindset: From those days and even to the present, many Catholics have too often felt that we have still to prove ourselves as truly American. Nothing has seemed capable of persuading the Protestant majority that Catholicism could be compatible with American democracy. It has been said that Catholics’ participation in World Wars

CNSNews.com - Georgetown Says It Covered Over Name of Jesus to Comply With White House Request

Edwin Mora of CNSNews.com filed this story today . The Jesuit inscription, "I.H.S.", was covered over during the address. The origin of IHS, from the Greek, is described in detail here in the New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia . IHS refers to a contraction or monogram of the name for Jesus as detailed.

Visitors ask...TLM at Georgetown University in Washington, DC

A common search item concerns the TLM at Georgetown University . It was widely reported initially that this was going to be offered weekly, that it was to be held in the Copley Crypt and that the time would be constant during the school year. Thus, I posted it in the Mass Menu . I searched the Georgetown websites to see if I could find this Mass and confirm these facts, but finally found a location that refuted these initial reports. Someone I found to be "in the know" informed me that the TLM Mass is currently "suspended," if/when it is held, it will be a private Mass , that it is NOT going to be open to the general public , and that it is not a general fixture for the Archdiocese of Washington. As such, I have removed this Mass listing from the Right Menu . It should surprise nobody that any college Mass is held for the University students and is probably said as a private Mass by one or more priests at their discretion. Therefore, I am happy to recei

New TLM Mass locations added in D.C. and Virginia

I checked my favorite website, MassTimes.org and found several new TLM Masses I thought I 'd list on this blog's menu bar to the right . To discover these, I entered MassTimes.org, used a search string beginning with a local zip code and stipulated "Latin" as being the preferred language . It returned both the Latin Novus Ordo Masses and those Masses listed as being in the Extraordinary Form . Here is the full complement . I now have listed Georgetown University which has the TLM being celebrated on Sundays in Copley Crypt during the school year, and both St. Lawrence and St. Catherine of Siena in Virginia. Please email me if you have any corrections, if one of the Churches listed obtains a website or if special events are taking place. I am happy to post this information.

First Things Blog: Coming to a Town Near You

Joseph Bottum of the Catholic Magazine, First Things , reminds us that he will be in Washington, D.C. on March 17th, 2008 : [...] On Monday, March 17, at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Called “Living with the Dead: Why Cities Need Cemeteries and Nations Need Memorials,” it’s at 7:00 pm in the ICC auditorium . Cosponsored by the Tocqueville Forum at Georgetown and National Civic Art Society , the lecture is a specific application to civil architecture and urban design of the work I did in “ Death & Politics ,” the long essay on the centrality of grief to political theory that appeared this summer in First Things . The respondents will be National Endowment for the Arts chairman Dana Gioia, the New Criterion ’s Roger Kimball, and the architectural historian Denis McNamara. A reception will follow the lecture, I’m told. The events is open to the public, and no RSVP is needed, although you might drop them an email to say you’re coming, so they can get a rough count for t

Campus Ministry Endorses Celebration of Latin Mass

In response to student requests, the TLM was initiated at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. twice each week and the number of attendees is increasing. The TLM is now being celebrated in the Crypt and the Office of Campus Ministry has agreed to regularize this arrangement: Copley Crypt was chosen over Dahlgren due to its architecture and the placement of the altar, said Fr. Stephen Fields, S.J., one of the priests who say the Tridentine Masses. The Mass is celebrated on campus according to directives outlined in Pope Benedict XVI’s letter “Summorum Pontificum” last year. “The Archdiocese of Washington is working on other norms to be followed for the celebration of this form of the Mass, and our celebration of it will fully comply with these,” Fields said. The Tridentine Mass is now celebrated in Copley Crypt on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. and Sundays at 11:30 a.m. Fields and Fr. William Farge, S.J., currently preside over the Mass, and Fr. John Siberski, S.J., and Fr. James Duff
