American Papist - Action Item: Conscience Clause Legislation

Thomas Peters has an excellent reminder on his blog today regarding comments on Conscience Clause Legislation from the USCCB website. The deadline for comments is April 9th, 20009.

Catholic Review Online: National pro-life postcard campaign to be supplemented by e-mails (CNS)

The Catholic Review Online carries a story from CNS about a website initiated by the USCCB facilitating the sending of "Pro-Life" emails to members of Congress . The campaign supplements the national postcard campaign begun in dioceses throughout the country in late January. Both efforts are being coordinated through the Washington-based National Committee for a Human Life Amendment. “Tens of millions of cards have been distributed in parishes, schools, non-Catholic churches and civic organizations across the country,” said Deirdre A. McQuade, assistant director for policy and communications at the USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, in a news release. “The e-mail campaign will give even more citizens the chance to participate,” she added. The e-mails, which can be sent from the USCCB’s Web site at www.usccb.org/postcard , contain the same message as the postcards. “At this time of serious national challenges, Americans should unite to serve the good of all, born and

Visitors ask...Daily Latin Mass Readings?

This is one I have tackled before under various "tags" so the way the search is phrased is critical. First, if one wishes to see the Latin and English Propers together side by side, the only alternative is a good daily Missal. They are back in vogue and the Baronius, Angelus, Saint Joseph and several others are all excellent. I personally prefer the Baronius as I have stated. One option for Sundays is this site maintained by a solitary individual who has done a great job . Note that the Propers are only good for weekends and major feasts. Also, some of the wording may not conform totally to the Summorum Pontificum editions that are now being released. I have found that to be rare except around the Triduum. If you wish to see the English translation of the Latin, this website can't be beat . It is well done, it has RSS and Atom feeds and the Deacon even provides a widget if you want to install it. I subscribe to this feed and use it often here. If one wants

Visitors ask...Conception Abbey Revised Grail Psalter (CARG)

Since the announcement that the USCCB has chosen the Revised Grail Psalter of Conception Abbey, I have been swamped with searches for more information. Here is what I know: The Revised Psalter comes from here The Rector makes reference to the work as the first item in this news report Abbot Gregory Polan seems to be the motive force (see above) Adoremus in its November edition makes comments on this Psalter here The rights to the Psalter belong to Conception Abbey. The USCCB had been in contact and negotiations with Conception Abbey and apparently had worked out arrangements regarding copywritten material. In short, it is unlikely that "open versions" of this are available at present. Bishop Serratelli did say that the Psalms captured the original Hebrew exquisitely and that the sung versions were beautiful. I will update this if I hear more, but the New Liturgical Movement is likely to break this news.

USCCB - Bishops Approve Icel Gray Book Translation of the Proper of Seasons and Revised Grail Psalter

Following up on a post from yesterday, I found the official announcement , made today, by the USCCB Office of Media Relations : Bishops Approve Icel Gray Book Translation of the Proper of Seasons and Revised Grail Psalter BALTIMORE—The U.S. bishops approved the ICEL Gray Book Translation of the Proper of Seasons November 11, at their General Assembly in Baltimore, in a 189-30 vote. The bishops also approved the Revised Grail Psalter by the Monks of Conception Abbey for liturgical use in the United States in a 203-5 vote. The Committee on Divine Worship placed the Gray Book edition of the Proper of Seasons , the Mass prayers for special parts of the liturgical year like Advent and Lent, before the bishops at their June 2008 meeting in Orlando, but the vote taken was inconclusive. After a subsequent mail ballot was sent to the Latin rite members of the conference who had not voted, the translation did not receive the necessary two-thirds approval. The bishops proposed modifications,

AmericanPapist: Breaking: US Bishops set the record straight in today's statement

Thomas Peters of American Papist is announcing this breaking story. The USCCB has published a press release clarification of the issues dealing with abortion and the Freedom of Choice Act in response to those who would attempt to move the discussion away from Roman Catholic teaching. Please read this "must read" story! The clarification, here posted in PDF format , was co-signed by Justin Cardinal Rigali and Bishop Murphy of Rockville Centre, NY.

CNA: Cardinal Rigali defends conscience protections for pro-life health workers

Catholic News Agency carries a story on a letter written by Cardinal Justin Rigali , Archbishop of Philadelphia and Chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee for Pro-Life Activities, to all members of Congress. The story states in part: Cardinal Rigali...wrote the July 18 letter in response to a New York Times article about a draft proposal requiring that any program run or funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) must certify that it will not refuse to hire nurses and other healthcare workers who object to abortion and abortifacient contraceptives. News of the proposal prompted criticism from abortion rights supporters. On Friday Sen. Hillary Clinton said the draft was a "gratuitous, unnecessary insult" to women. While noting that he was not specifically responding to the reported proposal, Cardinal Rigali said some of the proposal’s critics had made “sweeping” charges that did not acknowledge the legal tradition of freedom of

On Liturgical Issues - June 17th, 2008 (WDTPRS)

Fr. Zuhlsdorf has finally had the opportunity to comment on the article written by John Allen who recalls the "play-by-play" of the vote of the USCCB on whether to accept the new translation of the Propers for the Seasons . He makes some rather interesting points that I had missed. Fr. Zuhlsdorf also has high praise for Bishop Seratelli of Paterson, NJ who has published something about translation on his Diocesan website . They are both very interesting reads.
